Wireless Multimedia Storage?
The pcs in my home network are bogged down with pics, music and videos. Will a external drive alow easy access and sharing? What about wireless?
 |
Pick up a couple of TB drives (cheap now) and build an inexpensive Linux server. You can RAID mirror the drives for data integrity and to guard against failures and network the thing very simply.
You can build a good Linux-based server of this type for well under $400. I have one right now. |
Thanks but that sounds a bit heavy. Looking at this:

Definitely a simpler solution although I'm paranoid about HDD failures. Don't put anything on a HDD that you're not prepared to lose - unless you've got backups.

I have 3TB in a Windows Home Server that is using a 100MB Ethernet connection to my home LAN. All of our videos, music and pictures are on it and response time is just as good as if it was on the local PC's hard drive. you can pick up WHS s/w for $150 online, then install it on an older PC with 1GB RAM (min) and as many hard drives as you want.

Funny how cheap storage has become.
Used to do tape, then CD's, then DVD's. These days I just check the weekend circular or NewEgg and look for the days deal on HD's. Buy one and when it's full shelve it with a printout of the directory. I remember the first gigbyte drive I bought was $3,000. Crazy when the MicroSD chip in the wifes BB is 2 GB and was $30. |
This works pretty good for me. Added 2 500G drives with RAID1.
