Yikes! Tempered glass in our shower spontaneously shattered today!

My wife came home this afternoon to find that the largest piece of glass in our shower enclosure had shattered. Glad neither of us was in there when it happened. Only thing I can figure is that I must have stressed this piece when I had the enclosure apart a few weeks ago to recaulk everything. I had trouble getting this piece out and ended up lifting it up over my head to get it out of the frame. I remember thinking it was a little crazy to have such a large chunk of glass above me as I held the lower part. In case you're wondering, a 4x5 piece of glass will fit comfortably in a 5 gallon bucket after shattering.

At least that wouldnt have been too sharp if ya had been in there. Did ya throw a chunk of spark plug at it? The ceramic off of plugs AKA "Ninja Rocks" at the local FD will shatter tempered glass. A spring loaded center punch works pretty good.

tempered glass is great, very safe for these applications, BUT it is very vulnerable to the slightest forces at its edges. You likely tweaked it when you played with it?

Make sure you replace it with tempered glass

+1 - The glass should "float" in the frame. If you have to force it in, something's wrong.

P.S. - Where can you still buy that anodized gold aluminum? Haven't seen that since Nixon was in the White House!

It went together easily. I put big blobs of silicone in the bottom corners and remember it flopping back and forth as I installed the rubber edging. There shouldn't have been any torque on it.

I've pulled out dozens of tempered glass sliding shower doors.
I set one down before hauling it away. Just nicked the edge and *POOF* my hands were empty.

I love throwing them at the dump. It looks like they penetrate the ground when they hit.

Any chance one of the edges was in contact with a screw or anomaly (grout, stone, etc.) in the mounting assembly?

Any big temperature swings in the house?

Did you piss off the cat lately?
