Charlotte to Raleigh
Anyone ever drive from Charlotte to Raleigh? Is the best way I85 to I40, or cut across Hwy 49 to Hwy 64? I dont really want to get on a small two lane road if it just slightly shorter as the interstate would probably be faster. How is the Hwy roads?
Thoughts? |

When I was there flying the Carolina Hurricanes, the best way was usually the Interstate. Then there was a lot of construction, and I tried the other way..... once.
Stick to the interstate. Have a lot of funny stories about driving there during the winter. |

Not a simple question because of traffic patterns around Raleigh / Durham. But if you can avoid the normal morning rush hour, I-85/I-40 is about as quick and far easier as the back roads on a perfect day.

Interstate.
There are always things that can screw you up either way, like road construction, a big concert at that outdoor venue (I don't whether it's still Verizon Amphitheatre or something else now) or something at CMS with the traffic coming in and out, but by and large, you'll have a much better shot at making good time if you stick to the superslab.

If you're not used to it, what is considered PITA TAILGATING anywhere else in the world is simply neighborly 'drafting' down there. Would be breezing along at 75-ish, all alone, and some local would come from way back, or slow down till I passed, and suck in behind. Even when I pulled to second lane. Was finally 'informed' that this was perfectly normal for a region raised on NASCAR. The REALLY funny part was during the winter during one of their famous ice storms. Every car on the road (still engaged in NASCAR-style driving) was in the ditch or marooned in the center divider stuck at the end of 300 feet of swirling skidmarks. There was not a rental car to be had south of Philly. All in all, I loved my time there. Last edited by fingpilot; 04-11-2009 at 01:03 PM.. |

Define Raleigh. I grew up there. You going downtown, Wake Forest, Garner, Fuquay Varina? I-85 used to suck but is better now. I-40 if you are headed south of town. BTW, if you can put your hands on that hex head bolt let me know. Need a buddy pass?
