OH! The pain...the humility! The 25 years... Gotta love it!

I was at Michigan State in the early 90s. Its a big school, with a huge campus, and sexual assaults were not terribly uncommon.

One night, some big guy, like 6'4" decides he is going to try and drag some coed into the woods and have his way with her. *BUUUZZZZZZ* Sorry, pal, wrong answer. Turns out this gal, little thing, like 5'4", was a taekwondo black belt. She florcked this guy up. Shattered jaw, broken ribs, fingers.....kind obvious she has just beaten his ass when he was already on the ground wimpering like a baby. Cops just laughed it off because she was 'defending' herself. Awesome.

In the democratic state of Kalifornia, she would be prosecuted for assault and attempted murder.
Some of the folks in this state (the ones in the northern part of this state mostly) prefer to protect the rights of the criminals over the victims.

actually, sammy is not too far from the truth in MOST - maybe all - states

once you have defended yourself (guy on the ground, curled in a ball, disabled -- maybe not too far from the scene described) then you need to back off (legally)

there may also be a higher standard for a trained person like a black belt (of course, the Chinese might not recognize a lower level black belt as highly trained...)

So if you wipe somebody out - stop. If you continue to attack when there is no longer any danger then you might get prosecuted.

But, here, she was a very small boded person, female, under threat of a heinous crime. Few cops would do anything (except maybe offer her a billy club); if they did, then she would surely not be prosecuted; if she was, it is hard to imagine a jury that would convict.

It is better to be judged by 12 than carried by 6.

I think as long as that guy was conscious he was a threat.

Its only relevant in that the piece is an over twelve year old op ed piece... carry on, continue arguing , proselytizing, etc. over old news. Why not repost some Kitty Genovese news now?

I believe Royko was syndicated to either NY Post, or Daily News and enjoyed his style..
