Yep, they're shooting at us!

I ride this bike path a lot, usually a couple of time a week, because the round trip is about 40 miles, and it is completely off the road. Usually, I ride it with another person, and I have the Keltec with me. Now you know why! A multi-thousand dollar bike is a target for stealing.

Call it "Bike Jacking" !!!

Cyclist shot in Terry Hershey Park
April 6, 2009

KHOU.com staff report

HOUSTON -- A cyclist was shot in Terry Hershey Park.
Houston police say a man was riding his bike in the park around 8 p.m. on Monday when he was approached by two robbers. The man attempted to ride away when one of the suspects allegedly pulled out a gun and fired.

The victim was taken to the hospital by ambulance.
Officials say the bullet only grazed the man and he will be okay.
The two men involved in the attempted robbery are on the run.

I hope it's a pistol and not a folding rifle.

red-beard 04-07-2009 05:46 AM

No, I don't carry a folding Bayonet with me. The P3AT fits just fine in a jersey pocket.

We have a rails to trails (unused railway that was converted into a bike\walking path) area in Atlanta that has had some issues like this recently. Most of them here seem to be standard muggings looking for wallets and credit cards, I haven't heard any reports of bikes being stolen.

Punk kids.

You know, as I think about it, maybe this would be a decent deterrant!

Can you mount a 30 cal mini-gun on the handlebars?

red-beard 04-07-2009 06:07 AM

I think an Uzi might be a tad more useable...

A couple of years ago, I did a 12 hour mountain bike race that Tinker Juarez rode. The week prior, he had been doing some roadie training on a long bike bath in the Los Angeles area and some hoser jacked his bike. Literally demanded the bike with a weapon in hand and rode off on it. Real high end Cannondale road bike.

We gave him a bunch of **** about riding a road bike... :D

Wear a Ninja mask while you ride. If I was going to steal a bike, and I was waiting in the bushes and a dude rode by with a ninja mask on, I would wait for the next bike.

Hmm....one of my friends just bought an M107...

He doesn't bike, so it won't do him any good.

Porsche-O-Phile 04-07-2009 11:10 AM

A Walther PPK/S fits well in a cycling jersey inconspicuously. Hypothetically speaking of course, not that I'd ever do such a thing in the paradise of CA where nobody needs to carry concealed and can depend on Big Brother to be there 24/7/365 to save us from a bad situation. Wouldn't dream of it. Nosirree.

red-beard 04-07-2009 12:16 PM

I wear a 5XL Jersey. The Uzi will fit.

legion 04-07-2009 12:58 PM

What about a ma deuce? That seems to offer way more protection than an M107.

Update

One of the guys riding on our team was in the park at the time, and was warned to turn around by other bikers who heard the shots.

Stupid. That park can be great during the day, but there are an awful lot of spots for bad guys to hide in the dark.

I always carried a piece when cycling in Houston.

Had a few punks on BMX bikes try this with a pocket knife on American River Parkway, around here.. They pedaled up next to me, told me to give them my bike. I ran away from them on the road bike I was riding, caught up with another person, told him what happened and asked if he minded if I rode with him a while. He stopped at a point where the trail went a bit downhill on a corner, we lay in wait, jumped the punks and beat hell out of them, threw their bikes into the river

Porsche-O-Phile 04-07-2009 08:01 PM

Hahaha! That's awesome!

Nice going. I wish there were more people willing to respond to thuggery like this. It might put some respect and maybe even a few brains into the "wanna-be tough guy" crowd that seems to be swelling in numbers every year.

Perfectly justified IMHO based on your account. Great story!

Texas.

N!

Tobra 04-07-2009 09:46 PM

That was not even my idea. The other dude was about maybe 35-40, I was early 20's. I told him what was up, he asked how many of them, right away he says we should stop, knew where we could get the drop on them. They looked very surprised to see me again.
