Things you find in the trash

Found this on curb the other day, just scattered about next to all the trash bags. Some of the tools have a 60s flavor, radio is probably 70s. Scraper has a price tag still on it, 79 cents.

Just neat old stuff.

I found an old cork screw once and sold it on ebay for over $600!! One man's trash in another man's treasure!

Zeke 04-08-2009 01:06 PM

I can't tell you how much stuff I've gotten out of the trash. I still poke around now and then. In fact, I pulled what looks to be the base of a shredder out of the alley last night. Nice tall, slim trash can!

The Little Prince case has got to have some value. There are some serious collectors of that Little Prince stuff.

Edit: Oops, I was thinking of TinTin...

Bill Douglas 04-08-2009 01:30 PM

Yes, just the other day I was sorting through some trash and came across New Zealand's ex-prime minister, Helen clarke.

pwd72s 04-08-2009 01:40 PM

The "little prince" case is a portable radio??? If so, not only little prince collectors...there are collectors of "novelty radios", early transistors, etc. (edit) I see the radio now..inside the brown leather case?
I have a book on collectable early transistor radios...give me better pics, brand name, model # if you can find any, etc. Maybe I can give you a guestimate. It's crazy...wish I hadn't dropped the old Toshiba I had as a kid.

Most aren't worth much, other than their novelty factor...but if you hit the right model? $$$$.

TerryH 04-08-2009 01:48 PM

Wouldn't have brought this up, but being as we're talking trash....

I noticed a Kirby vacuum and attachments out on trash night a few blocks from home. So I took it home, invested $58, got it running, polished the chrome, and sold it for $175 on craigslist to the first guy that stopped by. Now I'm an unofficial Kirby refurbisher. lol

Radio is in the little faux leather case. A Zenith.

Great stuff Shaun. Takes us back 40 or 50 years

HardDrive 04-08-2009 02:04 PM

I was walking along in Brookline, MA one day. Some guys were cleaning out an appartment, looked like an old person had died. There were boxes and boxes of vintage Lionel trains! I was out for a walk, but I stopped and called a cab and brought it all home. Brought a pretty penny on E-bay.

pwd72s 04-08-2009 02:06 PM

Looks like a Zenith Royal 185. "Verical, plastic, left front vertical slide rule dial over large perforated grill area with upper right logo. two right side thumbwheel knobs, AM, battery."

Value given was $30...sorry, you didn't hit the jackpot. But to keep in mind, my reference book is a 1994 edition...so values up since then.

Old treasures...fun stuff. Oh, book didn't give a date on this one, but I'd guess mid 1960's...9V battery powered. Did you check to see if it still plays? Like I said...fun...

my last customer was throwing out a 40something inch Toshiba bigscreen. it just quit working one day and he bought a new one. brought it home, took off the back, blew out the dust, checked the fuses and Voila! I got me a big screen tv! I furnished most of our old wine shop from throw aways picked up here and there. I've acquired tools, appliances, furniture, boats/motors and even vehicles like this.

I think there's a term for us... Dumpster Divers!

johnco 04-08-2009 02:49 PM

Paul, howya like this old Bendix radio. rescued from a dumpster and still works!http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1239230979.jpg

I found thousands of dollars worth of stuff one day in the US Coast Guard dumpster. A cutter was being reassigned to another location and they just threw away all the stuff that they didn't want to carry on board the cutter. Tools, pumps, engine parts, band-it tools, gear/wheel pullers etc... Filled up the back of my pick-up truck!:)

pwd72s 04-08-2009 05:23 PM

Holy Krap, John...That a Catalin plastic radio? Some confuse it with Bakalite...but catalin was smoother. Anyway, it seems the Bendix is the least valuable of the Catalin radios, but I think it's deco style is wayyy cool! Do you have a model number? A 1992 book I have places the value (mint..I'm afraid) at anywhere between $65 and $275. Who knows what a collector would pay today.

Shine that puppy up and enjoy! Oh...made late '40's, depending on the model.
Who knows? This may have been the radio that was on when Marilyn Monroe posed for "the" calendar photo...a leering reporter once asked: "Did you have anything on when that photo was taken?" She replied: "The Radio."...

I was kind of "into" radios for a spell...probably an only child syndrome thing...my old 5 tube radio was a dear friend to me...

(edit) A quick search found this site...for those who wish to know more about old radios..

I know a guy who was driving through an alley once and spotted a guitar neck poking out of a dumpster, He stopped to check it out and grabbed the guitar.
Turned out, it was a vintage instrument. worth about $8000 at the time. Gretsch or Rickenbacher, I forget which.

porsche4life 04-08-2009 05:59 PM

We work beside the Highway. We find some good stuff occasionally.

LeeH 04-08-2009 09:11 PM

I picked up two lawnmowers yesterday. I can't decide whether to get them running or put them on Craigslist as is. It's fun to resurrect one, but the $/hour ratio isn't that great. If I sell them 'as is' for $25 apiece then the $/hour ration is fantastic.

The TV we used to use in our workout room came out of a dumpster. After using it for a couple of years we sold it for $25 at a garage sale.

This gives new meaning to the term WHITE TRASH....next ya all will be tellin me ya all live in a trailer...then ya all will not only be white trash but tralier trash as well.

Ohhh I suppose if ya lived in Europe ya would be Euro Trash.

Buckterrier 04-09-2009 03:39 AM

A bit off topic but all the same. Got a penny as change last year. Turns out to be a 1909-S VDB. I call a coin collector and tell him. He doesn't believe me, says he has never heard of anyone getting one as 'change'. He thinks I robbed a house or something. So my wife and I go down to his shop. Turns out the guy is a really nice man, late 70's. I help him focus his microscope to take a gander at it. He's says sure enough. He pulls out a whole vile full of 1909-S. Says he never has had a VDB. He gives me $500.00 for it!!

targa911S 04-09-2009 03:39 AM

Found a "The Gibson" tenor guitar at a garage sale once. The lady thought it was a Uke. Bought it for $4.00!! Sold it for $600.00

Anyone know the name for that type of adjustable wrench? I've hung on to a similar one for a few years, just thought it was cool old tool.

best roadside shopping times are after hurricanes. insurance cheats are replacing the slightly used with brand new and ugraded

ramonesfreak 04-09-2009 04:26 AM

taking the garbage to the dumpster at work last year, i looked in and and saw a perfect condition NAD amplifier with pre-amplifier. Jumped in, got it and drove straight to the used stereo shop and got $300 for it. there was an old pioneer silver face amp too, which i kept and still use

Looks like smooth jawed version of a pipe wrench which is also referred to as a monkey wrench. The modern version would be a adjustable/crescent wrench.

Side note. I'm surprised by how many ads I see in magazines where the mechanic/technician is smiling and proudly holding his adjustable wrench. Adjustable wrenches are usually good for rounding bolts/nuts and busting knuckles and should be the least used tool in his box. I use them more to bend metal more than loosen bolts. Of course, a box/open/socket wrench of the correct size should be used on fasteners.

When I lived in a college town, it was a well known fact that the spoiled kids from out of state typically threw out everything that wouldn't fit in their car prior to leaving for the summer. Apparently mommy and daddy paid to refurnish their apartments. It was amazing the stuff that would be stacked around the dumpster in apartment complexes. Best that I found was a nearly new poposan (sp?) chair sitting outside my apartment one day. I used that thing for probably 5 years, absolutely the most comfy chair I've ever had.

In the late 90s my brother and I went dumpster diving at Boston University when they would get rid of computers from the labs. We once brought home five or six complete 486 DX66 machines which were still complete and working fine... they literally unplugged them from the wall and tossed them into the dumpster. My bro turned them into a Linux network in his apartment.

Schumi 04-09-2009 08:16 AM

I used to do a hellava lot of dumpster diving in the south St. Louis area. We would hit up office supply store dumpsters - they would always pay out.

The other shocker was a local Blockbuster- they threw away about 200 brand new DVD cases every 2 weeks. I guess when then get new movies in individual cases they put them in their own special cases and throw the new DVD cases away. I had about 1000 DVD cases in my basement for three years. I think I gave a lot away eventually. It seemed like such a waste to throw them out. I put my burned CD's in them.

We would also go buy these car audio installer shops... a lot of times when they put in new head units or speakers they would throw the OEM stuff away. We got a lot of free car speakers and stereos like that. Also, burnt out car stereo amps would get thrown out- but those cases are aluminum and I used them from a lot of electronics hobby problems. My friend who sometimes take them and fix them- usually a blown chip or fuse. We worked at an electronics repair shop back then (2004)

Now that I live in a university-centered city I need to get back into it. The main thing is- you need a guy with a truck :-).

Spotted the right box among a pile of junk in an open trailer. Looked like it was headed the direction of the dump. At the next traffic light I rolled my window down and....

It's an exact match to the pair on the left which I bought about 22 years ago. Stuck under the bottom drawer of this "new" box was a set of large combination wrenches 20mm and up, yahoo!

I trash picked exactly one time in my life. One of my neighbors threw out a really nice leather sofa. Me and a friend grabbed it and brought it into the house. Within a week the whole Fkin' place was infested with roaches....seems they got rid of that couch for a reason.

Took me several fumigations to rid my house of the damn filthy little insects. I didn't keep the sofa either.

Super_Dave_D 04-10-2009 08:09 AM

I like to play a game called "how long will this last". I played sunday night - placed an old weedeater out with the trash and it was gone in 30 minutes.

Shaun @ Tru6 04-10-2009 08:13 AM

I did that once with a broken Speedmaster knock-off. Put it on the front steps. Day one, someone took it and put it on the door handle. Day two, someone put it in the bushes and taped a small note to the door commenting on the "very nice bushes." Day three it was gone.
