can a regular bar fridge be used for wine storage?

can a regular fridge be cranked down (actually..UP in temp) enough to store wine? i know a fridge cycles on and off.

i have a large bar fridge, and a copious amount of wine about to show up. i can either pony up the $$ for a proper wine fridge or put my extra chill box to the task. i have the option to store my wine at my office. the seaside cool breeze keeps my office super cool.

cliff.

just wondering.

Some answers I received when I asked the same question. Most fridges fluctuate too much from their on and off setting. Most fridges also have compressors that although rubber mounted still vibrate the entire fridge too much for optimum storage. Must be careful on the moisture setting drying corks. Not sure if any of these really would make a difference but I opted to buy a quality digital cooler just in case. I am sure short term would be fine.

Cheers

What Whisky said. I'm not sure that you can get it to run at 55 deg, and the vibration is a killer for wine. Plus they are really a sealed box, a good wine fridge (which btw is a constant temp unit, it will work as a heat pump if it gets too cold, cheap ones don't do that) vents to the outside so you reduce condensation (forms mold) and allow some oxygen interchange.

Rapid temperature fluctuation is the killer. If your office temp stays relatively constant, that's a great environment. I store a bunch of cases in my basement where even on the hottest day it is still nice and cool.

Don't forget to control light too - keep the wine in the boxes, on their sides.

My wine stays in the box until it goes into the glass!

personally, i would love to see some mid level wines served in boxes. some wine shop in denver does a small label. works great for that healthy glass a day habit. the bottle a day habit? not so much.
