20/20 If I Had a Gun

Did anybody watch that crap last night?

m21sniper 04-11-2009 09:28 AM

No, care to give us a synopsis?

A hour of my life that I will never get back.

Didn't see it. But let me take a guess:

Guns are bad, trot out tragic shooting story, lots of emotive crap that focuses on victims, flog the 'gun show' loophole to death, more emotive factless crap, the end.

Did I get it right?

This video give some idea of what they did.

I watched a bit of it online after you posted. I had to comment on the "kids with guns" bit. Total sensationalistic tripe.

And a lost hour here. I can save ya the trouble. The best safety for a gun is education.

+1000 Who picks up a gun and looks down the barrel. That is Looney Tunes stuff.

nostatic 04-11-2009 09:57 AM

If you teach them this, then you don't get as much stupidity

Interesting I suppose, but I would like to challenge the validity of their argument.

They were basically saying that it is pointless for an individual to have a gun for protection as they probably wouldn't get a chance to fire it in a stress situation. On top of that, there is only a 25% chance of the shot hitting the target if they do get to fire. So they are basically saying that by having a gun you have a 12.5% chance of it doing any good.

Well, what is the chance of hitting anything if you don't have a gun at all?

Now that 12.5% looks quite attractive, essentially an infinite % better chance.

I don't mind them presenting their opinion and letting everyone decide for themselves whether they want to carry or not. What I do not want is someone else making the decision for me.

An interesting point though in that video. The first move, assuming you can't get out of the way? Taking cover buys you precious time to form the appropriate response, it may only be a fraction of a second, but it's a fraction of a second more. At the end of the day there's never going to be a 100% fix, it's about increasing your chances.

I didn't watch...my guess? All part of the mainstream media pushing Obama's agenda..

masraum 04-11-2009 11:01 AM

I watched the video posted above. I think that there is some validity in video, but at the same time, it's also got a lot of biases.

In the simulation, where the kids that had guns all got shot. Sure, the guys coming in with the guns were not only highly trained and comfortable, but they also knew which kid had the gun and where that kid was sitting, so that kid was the second target. If they hadn't known which kid was a target it may have been a bit different. Also, if the attacker had been untrained, that may have made a huge difference.

Not everyone should necessarily have a gun. Some folks just don't have it in them to be able to think/react/perform or maybe they could be trained to be adequate, but they won't get the training.

BUT everyone should have the right.

Reminds me of my engine out flight training, you really never know how you will react until it happens, so your not perfect but then every situation is not either. When it happened I was almost too calm, that's because it was real and not training. I think these kids were expected to perform because they were being watched, I never did as well with the instructor sitting next to me either..

Why is it I only ever hear about rights - right to own a gun, right to free speech, right to drive, yadda, yadda, yadda - never about responsibilities?

masraum 04-11-2009 12:33 PM

I've got to say, the 1st kid who couldn't get the gun out of the holster and then out of the shirt was pretty funny, and the other two boys were also pretty funny. I thought the girl was pretty good for a random person thrown into the fire, and at least the one kid just hid basically.

fingpilot 04-11-2009 01:11 PM

It was everything I have come to expect from Manhattan-based "Good Morning America".

slakjaw 04-11-2009 01:17 PM

I dont get what they were trying to say.. If I had a gun I could still get shot. um ok. stupid media f'k tards.

funny, except that they're going to grow up to be voters.

"more people get their news from ABC news than from any other source".

Dunno 'bout you guys, but it scares the hell out of me.
