Scam or not?

I have a boat listed locally on craigslist for sale. 20' boat w/trailer. Just received a call from a guy that plans to buy it and send it overseas. No, not the typical check to his shipper scam, he will pay ca$h. He has been straight forward so far, with his email address and phone #.

So, what is the scam? Bad bills? or is there a legitimate market for small boats in Europe?

And if he hands me a stack of cash, how do I make sure it is all good?

If he hands you cash, what else are you worried about? If you think the money is counterfeit meet him at the bank and deposit it while he waits.

I recently sold a Jeep through Craigslist. Met the buyer at the bank parking lot.

Cash is king... it does sound odd, but don't see how you could be scammed.

I sold my bike last week and cashed the check the following morning. The bank, which was not my own, gave me 85 $100 bills. I drove straight to my bank and deposited it. They used a marker to mark each one of the 85 bills. I was sweating it, but none turned up to be fake.

How much cash we talkin?

So I plan on meeting him in a public place. Does anyone know where I can buy one of those brown markers?

rick, as you got the bills from the bank not the buyer, no reason to sweat.

I had that exact same situation recently, for almost the exact same amount. He came and looked at my item, decided to buy, we went to his bank, he withdrew the money and handed it to me.

No risk there (other than getting robbed on the way home!)

Sounds legit, you can pickup a marker at staples or office depot for around $4 - $5

porsche4life 04-23-2009 06:51 PM

wal-mart, office depot, staples, etc....the guy that bought my turbo paid cash, I checked each bill in front of him w a marker--no problems.

dad911 04-24-2009 04:33 AM

Thanks Everyone, I'll get a marker today.

dad911 , in E.Europe is a huge demand on small boats. I have client that buys them in bunch and sells in ................Finland.
Don't have to worry about selling. Worry about bills being real.

Look for the strip as well.

m21sniper 04-24-2009 08:40 AM

if you hold it up to the light there is a watermark embedded in the bills.. That's the hardest thing to counterfit.

If he hands you a Cashier's check drawn on the National Bank of Lagos, Nigeria and drives away with the boat, CELEBRATE LIKE HELL, the BOAT IS GONE!
