968 vs Boxster
I am looking to buy a used Porsche. I am currently looking at a 1995 968 and a 1998 boxster. both have almost the same mileage and features. Both are convertibles and nearly the same price. What should I get? Pro's and Cons of each?

Well, the 968 has more horsepower then the Boxster, (248hp VS 208hp), is front engined, so it is easier to work on, and is more rare then a Boxster. As far as I can tell the cars weight is in the same ballpark. 1995 is also the last year they made the 968 and it is the year with the fewest of them made, so it is indeed a rare model.
I personally would go 968, but that is your choice... Last edited by RedBaron; 04-30-2009 at 02:34 PM.. |

I'd get the 968 because it's not a Boxster.

968 is rel. rare and a bit of a cult car
Boxster has superior handling & etc. I might buy a 968 and keep it, then buy a series of Boxsters to drive for fun... Best thing is to buy a Boxster S or shoehorn a new 997 DI motor into a Boxster. |

I've owned two 944's which is the direct precursor to the 968...
I've driven both multiple times. Me? I'd take the Boxster. The chassis on a Boxster always felt WAY stiffer than the chassis on any hard top 944 or 968. I imagine that a soft top 968 would have an even more flexible chassis (not a good thing). That said, what do you want? Handling? Boxster wins. Power? 968 wins. Collectability? 968 wins. Cool factor? 968 wins. Maintenance? Well, that's not so easy to call... The 968 is easier to work on, but the parts for it are expensive and hard to come by. The Boxster is harder to work on but parts are widely available and should be comparatively cheaper. Both are plenty easy to modify as well. There are tons of aftermarket parts for the Boxster. The 968 can have the variocam ripped out and the cylinder head from a 2.7 8 valve 944 installed. Why would you want to do that? Because then most of the parts for the 944 Turbo (951) become bolt-on. That's right, you can turbo a 968. If you want to go an even more elaborate route, I believe someone on this BBS kept the 968 head and had a custom twin-turbo setup fabricated. Just for comparison, Powerhaus did a single-turbo 16 valve 944 S2 that saw over 500 hp at the rear wheels.... Oh, and I think the 968 is a more forgiving car at the edge. With the weight pushed out to the ends, it tends not to rotate on you. Of course, a talented driver can do more with a Boxster.

What he said. 968s are interesting and sort of cool, but I think the 986 would be the better sports car by far.

Buy what ever one works for you. If I can find a boxster that I fit in well, I plan to buy one eventually. My give a damn about what other people think about my car didn't make it past highschool when my father gave me the option between a junker 72 VW van, or a junker 70 ford falcon station wagon that was more rust than steel, or walking.
24 miles to school is a fair walk, so I rolled in what ever one was working best.
