old stock certificate worth
How might a person best determine the worth (or lack of worth) of stock shares in a company that existed 40 years ago but no longer exists today?

Unless the company was bought by another company, probably worthless.

Is the company completely gone, or was it brought out by a competitor? If it was brought out, you would have gotten a stock swap, where your stocks are traded in for the new company's stock.
If the company went out of business, then your stock is worth a little more than the price of paper it is printed on.... -Z-man.

There are collectors of such certificates.
The value depends on several factors: Age. How elaborate/unusual the certificate face may be decorated. If the defunct company or original CEO has a known/historic 'cultural value'. If it is perhaps signed by someone 'interesting'. Selling? Try eBay.

These certificates were inherited. Is there a way to determine if a company was sold, evaporated or was sold to a company that then evaporated (or still exists)?

Wow! Very, very cool. Neat piece of history there. Maybe not as cool as thousands worth of old gold coins, but cool anyway.
