Prostate biopsy
 

Guys, although I've been a member for 5+ years, and post only sporadically, I do look in very frequently, and I'm aware of the vast array of knowledge/experience that this board possesses.
To that end ... I'm due a biopsy in the next couple of weeks as a second PSA test has revealed that levels are rising (not dramatically, but rising nonetheless).
I can read internet explanations of the procedure and implications, but I'd much prefer someones direct knowledge, and/or experience of it.

ps I'm 52.

First time I had the PSA level checked I was at 9. Had the biopsy and was 25% cancer. Had it removed 3 months later by robotic method. That was 4(?) years ago. I am 60.

The biopsy is done by sticking some sort of probe up your anus and then a needle/collector shoots through the wall of the rectum and into the prostate and grabs a sample.

Doc said it would be like a bee sting.

I have been a beekeeper. The sting was a lot more than a bee sting. Doc needed to do ten and by the sixth, I was hoping he was at ten.

Had a friend who just had a prostrate biopsy about a month ago. He said it was very painful and bled for some time after. Some say a biopsy could spread the cancer-seems logical however I have no scientific knowledge to back this up.

I don't want to scare you, but I had one 8 years ago and it is the only time in my life that I have ever fainted. And that was with morphine. Mine was negative so it was worth it for peace of mind.

Mine was a "piece of cake". Took a "prophylactic" antibiotic for a few days before and after. Drove myself 30 miles to the hospital, was prepped with a local, doc did about 10 or 12 "punches", the sensation and sound were an odd combination but more of a mental anticipation issue than pain. Got dressed, read a magazine for an hour, left and got in my BMW (manual) and drove home alone. No bleeding or post procedure pain of any significance. Good luck.

Ah well, I'll know what it feels like soon enough. Pain, even if bad, will be temporary, it'll be the result that'll matter.

Now that we have that out of the way, do you want to hear about my failed lithotrypsy (sic) and kidney to bladder stent tubes?

Btw good luck on the results . . . hopefully it will be negative.
