Top end done! Back in the air!
Decided to pull the cylinders on the O-200 for a top end, new exhaust guides, ground valves, seats, new rings etc. Repaired the oil pump cover housing which was just about shot. Ran it up today and got 50# of pressure and 40# at idle, need about another 15 min on the ground then back in the air, finally!! We were getting around a quart of oil every 2 hours, the exhaust guides were really shot.

so when are you coming over to Flanders.. it's been 90 years since it (possibly) flew over our fields.. and i'm sure it would like to fly over them again... I could sort something out with the mayor for 11 november...

Outstanding!
I'm preparing to jump back into the cockpit myself (going to get my CFI renewed and go after an instructing gig), but nothing like that - awesome work! |
looks great!
|
that's awesome.....do the guns shoot paintballs? that'd be fun :D
|
Great work, it must be a lot of fun to fly. I still haven't been in an open cockpit airplane, I'll have to get around to it one of these days.

i wonder if i could mount one on my rav4 :D can't wait to see vid. |
That is AWESOME!
Do you have a website that shows the restoration process and pictures of it flying etc? And finally, the most painful question.......ballpark-wise, what does something like this go for? Ok, one more question.......I would wager it will need to be certified to fly, what does that cost? |

Its certified under the experimental classification and its only 1150# gross so its also under the sport pilot class so its rather cheap to maintain, total cost to build was around 10K with the engine but that was back in the late 80's The only thing I have is a youtube site you can check out a few vids if the plane: <object width="425" height="344"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/yP0aFbI1S4k&hl=en&fs=1"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/yP0aFbI1S4k&hl=en&fs=1" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" width="425" height="344"></embed></object> |
Thanks! That is truly awesome. I cannot let my wife see my drooling over this. She has been trying to whittle down my hobbies for years!

Any leaks Craig? I bet you feel good knowing she is all up to par internally. I will have to keep an eye out for a flyin between us to meet up at this summer.
I just went to a breakfast flyin Saturday morning in the Pacer. Only two of us flew in as the winds were gusting to 35 and forecasted to go higher later in the day. It was an interesting ride home I can assure you as the wind gust picked up earlier than forcasted. |
Tim,
So far so good with the first run up, Looks like it will be nice tonight so I will get her up in the air and get some time on it. We did crack the case open just to check things out, it was back in 2000 when we put the O-200 crank in it and everything looked excellent. |
Just got back down, That was the most boring thing I have ever done, one hour of nothing but circling the airport in 55 degree weather with not much heat. All seams just fine, no leaks at all.

Craig,
Do you ever fly to Grosse Ile, MI? |
