Bruce's striking speed from 3 feet away was five hundredths of a second.

Bruce once caved in a protective headgear made from heavy steel rods, rods that had previously withstood several blows from a sledgehammer.

Bruce Lee is an inspiration to me. He believed in full contact fighting, dismissing forms, katas, and point fighting. His style, JKD, is an ecclectic blend of various styles using what works best for the individual. He is the grandfather of MMA, but during his lifetime the idea was not accepted. Being a full contact fighter myself, I hold Bruce in my top 5 people who I would like to meet if given the opportunity. I don't believe in all that "chi" mumbo jumbo. I believe it is an attempt to mystify sub-par fighting skills, David

Bruce very much believed in all that "Chi mumbo jumbo."

It is the force supposedly at play in all the soft styles. Tai Chi, Pa Qua, Yin Yang, etc. It is supposedly what lets a 70 yo little old wizened tai chi master throw a man twice his size 20 feet with the slightest of movement.

Me, i don't know personally, but Bruce believed it was real.

I heard that when Bruce tried to hit someone, the noise from his fist breaking the sound barrier would knock his opponent down before the punch would.

If Bruce lived up to 1/10th of his own hype and self-generated publicity, I'd have some respect for his skills.
As it is he was a celebrity, an urban myth. Nothing wrong with that, but it ISN'T REAL.
He hyped himself really well and made allot of money because of it.

So did the governator but you don't see me going around saying that Conan the barbarian was the toughest fighter of all time.
How about Rambo? He'd kick Bruce lee's butt with a 50 caliber machine gun under each arm.
Now Mr. T, that was one tough guy. I saw him in the "A" team on TV so it has to be real.

Bruce's reputation is no more realistic than the silly Chuck Norris stuff.

The only thing I could add to the debate is that in Dan Inosanto's book, he says that Bruce Lee did talk somewhat dismissively about 'Chi, meditation and internal training. However, halfway down the page of his daily to-do list was an entry entitled "mental cultivation".

So I think Bruce Lee was very aware of the "internal" aspects of martial art but didn't want people to think of it as separate from the "external".

I don't think there is any mystical power -- that doesn't mean we understand everything.

I don't know what sammy's problem is, but yes, he is dead wrong about that. People who knew Bruce Lee, or knew his students well, think extremely highly of him.


BTW - some of you will be interested that there is a movie on Ip Man coming out -- it is available in China, but I don't think it will be released here until they get the sub-titles worked out better than they are now
