2009 High School Graduation Presents???

We need to buy several presents for high school seniors this week so I need everyone's opinion on what to buy. One of my favorite gifts that I have purchased in the past was a cooler, but I want to consider something different this year.

Some of the ideas that my wife and I have thought of this week were:
Monogrammed bath towels
Monogrammed suit case
Cologne (not my idea but it was mentioned)
Blanket with school logo

Any other ideas would be greatly appreciated!

PS – My son’s best friend was told this weekend that his graduation present would be any car that he wanted, up to $40k. He’s a great kid and he got a full ride scholarship to Auburn so I’d say he has earned it. I didn’t have a recommendation for him (I haven’t given any thought of buying a $40k for my son) so I’m tossing this out for feed back on what you would buy if you were in his shoes.

We give a card with cash, amount depends on how well we know the kid.

It's high school, you'd have to be an idiot not to do well in high school?

Depends on budget, relationship to you, whether they're going to college (and whether they're going away or staying at home), etc. Most kids just prefer money. If they are going off to school/living in the dorm, a Target gift card is usually appreciated...that way they can buy the stuff they need and didn't get for their room. Also consider a gift card to their school bookstore if available. Collapsable laundry basket was appreciated by some of my stepkids' friends. We gave various linens to some kids....two we gave two nice down pillows each...purchased thru overstock.com at 4 for $69. So nice we turned around and ordered some for our bed. Another kid we gave a down/feather bed for dorm room twin beds.

What's out (from my thre stepk's and their friends) : pens, watches, backpacks/bookbags, pretty much anything electronic/computer related, luggage.

If you're gonna buy a cooler...many seem to like the collapsable/soft sided coolers.

But in the end they pretty much want money.

As to the kid going to Auburn...he's gonna need a truck, not a car

(Brother went to Auburn vet school)

Cash is always good. If you know where they're going for college, a shirt/blanket from the college bookstore can often be ordered online.

Depending on the recipient's taste, a watch is always a classy gift.

Our neices and nephews have received gift certificates from the bookstore at the college they will be attending. With the cost of books these days, $100 won't make much of a dent, but it helps!

We gave a leatherman wave to the son of Cindy's neice...he loved it. Said it was a "badass" tool in the thank you card. Guess that means he liked it. Oh...an added benefit: "made in the USA"...

Funny thing is that I just ordered a MacBook for my son's graduation present and I decided to go with the "free" printer; it's free after you wait six months for the mail-in rebate check to come in. I guess that would make me a cheap bastard if I gave one of the kids the printer!

Keep the ideas coming.....I'll show my wife all of the suggestions later this evening.

Cash

It's still the only gift I want 3 years after graduation.

Also, for a car, I would get a used M3 with about 30K miles for about $25k, then get some other toy (boat, waverunner, atv)
