Sheraton Black Rock - none finer.
On top of EVERYTHING else, you can walk right into the ocean from their beach and have incredible snorkeling!

What's your budget?
We stayed in an nice apartment with a great view near the beach in Wailea. Would you consider that or want a hotel?

We stayed at the Grand Wailea and were very pleased. That was about 4 years ago. We perfer the Wailea area. Quieter than the zoo on the otherside.

Ka‘anapali is the place we've been advised to go.
Budget: $300-$400 per night

We usually rent houses in Hawaii but last August we stayed at the Fairmont Kea Lani in Waimea. As a rule I'm not into resorts (other than the Hotel Hana Maui in Hana which is WAY too off the beaten track for most) but this place was really nice; huge room (on the back side with a semi-private garden and lawn with a view of Molokai), enormous bathroom with lots of towels and custom products that smell nice, awesome comped breakfast buffet, really good island fusion food and cocktails for dinner at Ko restaurant, kids loved the pools and slide where the servers remember your name, snorkel with sea turtles right off the beach, low-key gracious service that made people like us who don't like hotels forget that we were staying in one. I generally think Maui's over (-built, -crowded, -rated, -done), but the Kea Lani's cool...

If staying for a week or so, we skip the hotels and rent a house or condo.
VRBO has never let us down. I've rented places all over the US down though Central America.

We're at the Fairmont Kea Lani in August with our kids (hotel is all suites). Four Seasons and the Ritz Kapalua on Maui are quieter and have fewer kids even during summers/holidays, and so are more romantic.
Deals everywhere in Hawaii seem out of this world this summer. Other islands are good too: Fairmont Orchid on the Big Island was very quiet and nice - good pool, snorkling, but no real beach (Huggo's in Kona is good food!). Everyone complains about Waikiki, but the Royal Hawaiian is quite nice, and there's stuff to do after a short walk in every direction (summer surf, Duke's for Mai Tais, etc.). I like Sheraton a bit better. It is actually THE best snorkling we've done there, even better than those snorkling excursions where they take you out on a boat, etc. Black Rock is consistently clear, with tons of fish, turtles, etc. Also, fun to jump off Black Rock! The pool is great, too. The location is amazing, you can be in the pool having a drink, and then a few steps and you are in the ocean in a great swimming/snorking spot. |
