My son has a 12 MPH electric go kart, the next logical progression is a real gas kart. Heliocpters are a bargain in comparison.

**** there is cheaper stuff............"but knowledge learned is better earned if dont come to dear"
A go cart is fun..
The great thing about the heli is you need not near the real estate needed for a cart
a helicopter will tax your brain cells..hell do both!

David McLaughlin 03-04-2010 09:54 AM

The rest of my post didn't go in for some reason. I just meant that the R/C hobby can be addicting and a lot more money is going to flow. It's a fun hobby and IMHO teaches a lot. It'll teach responsibility, maintenance, eye / hand coordination and various mechanical skill that'll just grow with them.

onewhippedpuppy 03-09-2010 11:44 AM

I opened my son's birthday Syma S107 to charge the battery, and so I could play with it.;) What a cool little helicopter. It's easy to fly and seems impressively well made, quite frankly I didn't want to put it away. Thanks Mike, good call!

porsche4life 03-31-2010 06:50 PM

I got my S107 today... pretty sweet little toy. I was surprised by the build quality too....

71T Targa 04-01-2010 08:13 AM

Cool, where did you end up ordering from?

afterburn 549 04-01-2010 11:39 AM

whilst we are on gambit of subjects here...they provided a stifff wire for the T/R to the servo....hooking it to to the bell crank at T/R is no problem.........but to the wheel on the servo is a mystery...
seems like more then a bend in it would be nice..something more secure......do not want to loose a T/R on a 3000. dollar machine

I told you to order more than one. SmileWavy

I'm in Tampa right now and brought mine with me to my Dad's house. He has said that it will not leave his house ever again.

This is a quote from another on-line forum regarding the S107:

"If The Terminator had a bird sidekick, it would fly exactly like the S107.

It makes my in-perfect-order 6020-1's seem broken.

Add to that, it makes flying a standard non-gyro 6020 seem like vandalism."

I need to order myself a replacement.

Seahawk 04-01-2010 03:18 PM

This was all too hard for me to resist:cool:

That, plus we are headed to Williamsburg next week to celebrate my Dad's 80th...so I ordered two from these guys: RC Helicopters | Remote Control Helicopter | Mini RC Helicopter

Great stuff.

CarreraDan 04-01-2010 03:20 PM

Guys,
Be careful with this whole RC heli hobby, it can easily spiral out of control and cost you thousands of dollars you should be spending on your cars. I just got in from running 6 battery packs through by Blade mSR outside and it would be a good next step for some of you into the single rotor world. About a month ago I got my first collective pitch heli and it is one scary/exciting experience. Those wood blades spinning at 3000 rpm really get your attention when you spool them up. Still working on mastering hovering as everytime I have tried skip ahead to forward flight I get to buy a bunch of parts and take everything apart.

I haven't decided if I am going to stick with the collective pitch bird or go back to planes as honestly, it really scares the crap out of me and I don't find flying it relaxing at all--you can never break concentration on it or it crashes very quickly. My fixed pitch mSR is a relaxing, fun, fast, and most importantly a super durable way to unwind after work. Good luck and if any of you are interested in some bigger stuff check out Helifreak.com - Fun, Learning, Friendship and Mutual Respect, it is a good site with tons of info.

porsche4life 04-01-2010 03:28 PM

Anybody know of a place to get a good deal on those by the case? We may start carrying them at the Pharmacy/RadioShack I work in....

mikester 04-01-2010 04:25 PM

I use the helicopters to play with my boys at home. My 18 month old loves them. I walk in the door and he says "DADDY!! HELLCOPTERS!!!"

My wife has even had to bust out and fly it to make him happy some times. He asks he nicely for two things: Milk (from the boobs you know) and HELLCOPTERS!!!

I hope he ends up liking RC Airplanes more because that is really what I am in to.

My 5 year old flys the heck out of his still.

porsche4life 04-01-2010 05:14 PM

I got mine from ebay... Was like 27.99 shipped... Came direct from China of course...

porsche4life 04-01-2010 05:58 PM

WTF... My syma doesn't want to go any higher than about 6" on a full charge... I got it to go almost to the ceiling twice but thats it... I ran it alll the way down and am gunna try to recharge again...

porsche4life 04-01-2010 07:37 PM

Still no love from my SYMA... Should I send it back?

mikester 04-01-2010 07:41 PM

how are you charging it up?

If the batteries in the transmitter are not so good, it won't charge very well. If you're using the USB charger - when you plug it into the computer the light should come on in the big usb connector. Then plug it into the heli and it will go out (power switch is off). When the light comes back on, charging is done. It takes almost an hour to charge it up so be patient.

porsche4life 04-01-2010 07:43 PM

I've charged it both ways... new batts in the controller... It flew great for most of last night... Wondering if one of the motors is gimpy....

mikester 04-02-2010 05:25 AM

well, getting screwed had to happen to someone - I guess you drew that straw.

contact the seller I suppose but it the first I've heard of a bad one (not that it can't happen).

DavidI 04-02-2010 06:24 AM

I bought a http://www.digittronics.com/ProductDetail.asp?ProductID=622 Spycopter 3 for $129 (helicopter and 2.4 digital 4 channel controller) at the RCX show a couple of weeks ago. So far, I have gone through 2 tail rotors. I am too extreme with the controls and don't have a big enough area in my living room to get the hang of it.

As far as the helicopter not going higher than 5 feet, take a careful look at the area where the motor gear meshes with the large horizontal main gear. I had a couple hard landing and the main rotor had dropped down a little bit so the two did not completely engage.

Just a thought, David

porsche4life 04-02-2010 08:34 AM

Weird... I got it to fly fine for a whole charge cycle last night.... Charging it up again to see what it'll do....

afterburn 549 04-02-2010 12:58 PM

lithium's can be finicky............if thats what yoi have....

porsche4life 04-03-2010 10:23 AM

Its a Li-Po.... and ya its working fine now... Guess I need to be sure it charges really good every time....

Seahawk 04-08-2010 05:16 PM

My god, what a great little ship...S107. I bought two, one for me and one for my Dads birthday. The quality for $27.00 is, frankly, amazing.

His birthday celebration was tonight, 80 years young. While one flew the other charged...Flight of the Valkyries.

The waves break east and west simultaneously...

porsche4life 04-08-2010 08:03 PM

Like the dumbest guy I know ran mine down twice without killing the chopper... Nuff said... They're great....

mikester 04-08-2010 08:22 PM

:)

DavidI 04-09-2010 08:33 PM

I bought the Esky simulator that came with a USB controller. The program is clunky, so I searched around for an inexpensive program and found "ClearView" ClearView RC Flight Simulator - Home that has some great reviews. It had some great reviews, so I bought it for $40. My controller works with it, and I found a bunch of additional helos and planes available for download.

I am starting to understand the basic fundamentals. I have crashed about 100 times, so the simulator was great advice!

mikester 04-14-2010 09:02 PM

They have a larger version out now, the Syma S032 - I haven't seen a lot of it but it's bigger and getting good reviews.

I'm probably going to buy the Horizon Tandem Rescue copter tomorrow...

afterburn 549 04-15-2010 04:26 AM

Just bought a "real flight" WOW you can follow your bird of choice, "be in" your bird or fly on line with others........have not tried that yet

If you mean RealFlight G5 - I have that too. We could do combat online together.

SmileWavy

I picked up the new bird today. Pics later...after the kids go to bed...

afterburn 549 04-15-2010 06:39 PM

I Have not figured out how to get it on line......the mustang is a WOW

mikester 04-15-2010 08:54 PM

Oh yeah, this copter's neat.

mikester 04-16-2010 07:59 PM

jyl 04-19-2010 09:28 AM

I picked up something. Don't know the brand, something no-name, I figure it is a disposable beginner craft to learn on. Looks like a Syma S101? Electric, co-axial rotors, gyro, 3-channel, radio controlled. My son (10 y/o) and I are getting the hang of it.

Problem is, it can't seem to fly upwind in even a light breeze. The (don't know the terminology) tail rotor that is supposed to pitch it forward in order to fly ahead doesn't seem powerful enough.

I figure we'll get better at flying this and then get something more capable. Definitely not into indoor flight, we have too much breakable stuff in the house.

jyl 04-20-2010 07:51 AM

This guy is awesome. I would have thought the scale bodies were too heavy.

jyl 04-21-2010 08:26 PM

Okay, first one to post a video from their RC helicopter wins - admiration, I guess.

C'mon, you can afford a micro-videocam. Buy It Now for $6.66.

porsche4life 04-21-2010 08:29 PM

Wonder what that weighs? Not sure my Syma has enough thrust...

onewhippedpuppy 04-24-2010 08:37 AM

My son's Syma has taken on a strange oscillation, it won't hover level. When I try to hover it quickly starts rolling, the blades hit, and it crashes. Any suggestions? The blades visually appear to be fine, only a few nicks on the leading edges. No other visual damage. Maybe the balance bar above the rotors?

porsche4life 04-24-2010 08:40 AM

Check the balance bar..... Mine occasionally has a funny whine at full speed... When it does that it starts to counter rotate and drops instantly....
