Saw him in the early late 70's, probably more the early 80's. Was friggin' horrible. All drugged up I'm sure. Muddy Waters opened for him and he was awesome. Sat on a stool and played the blues. Clapton has straightened out his act and along with the tragedies has become a better person for it all I'm sure. Still enjoy his music.

Have seen him a number of times.
Each time he was better than the time before. He just keeps getting better. |
got front row for clapton coming up here with stevie winwood also on bill.

Clapton with Knopfler backing him up, wonderful tonight.
A song written about George Harrison's wife who Clapton stole away and killed the friendship between Clapton and Harrison. She eventually left Clapton because of his drug use, but he's reportedly still in love with her. The emotion in the song is louder than the music. <object width="425" height="344"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/_1vJD3J7u-A&hl=en&fs=1"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/_1vJD3J7u-A&hl=en&fs=1" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" width="425" height="344"></embed></object> |
Saw him live only one time, w/ Knopfler. Late eighties, early nineties, he was just getting popular again, and man what a great concert. Made it look easy, and MK was at the top of his game.
His latest stuff doesn't do it for me so much, (except for maybe that album w/JJCale) but I still think he has some relevance. (unlike, oh, say, the glimmer twins) |

Actually, Eric confessed his love for Pattie to George. George told Eric he could have her if he could have Eric's girlfriend. Technically, there was no stealing involved. |
Clapton, Carl Perkins and the "Man in Black"...

Patty Boyd Harrison Clapton..could be seen as one of the Groupies on the train in the Beatles movie Hard Days Night.
Ironically Patty did not wreck the Harrison Clapton friendship. The only thing Clapton ever did was Layla...Tennis Anyone vs I Am Lonely (Lennon above) Clapton is a guitar technician vs conceptionalist. |
his new stuff with JJ CALE is very good. JJ CALE blows Clapton away as far as overall sound and song writing and his original versions of cocaine and after midnight, i enjoy much more than Clapton's versions but I still dig the guy during certain periods. Love the Beano album and everything else he did up through the end of the 70s
Started reading his autobiography yesterday...im 150 pages into it and enjoying it. His appearance on The Last Waltz is truly great. I could watch that performance over and over |

What is great is that his strap falls off during the opening solo and Robbie has to jump in to cover. The joys of live playing. On the album they actually edited out Robbie's solo and strung the two Clapton opening solos together.

i read dylan's book in one sitting without ever get out of my chair, but must say, this one is more interesting even though im an obsessed dylan fan....this one is however, woefully short on details when it comes to certain subjects but, fairly honest in his observations about his dreadful behavior towards himself and others. |
I'm a big fan of Clapton. Layla is a great song, but not sure how anyone remotely familiar with his work would say that it was the only thing he did. Has it gotten the most air play of anything he's done? Perhaps. However, he's done better songs before and after Layla. Reptile was crap, but he's done some fantastic work later in his career. Among other stuff, the entire From the Cradle album is wonderful, the two songs he did to memorialize his son's passing are both excellent tunes, etc.
And, Clapton is a technician? The guy plays with three fingers. I'm sure even Clapton wouldn't call himself a technician. Quote:

Anyone who calls Clapton less than stellar is a fool. End of story.

Best Clapton video ever!
