Sealant for nail heads?

I'm going to paint the siding of a house. It's got somewhat exposed and rusting nail heads that are showing through. I guess they weren't galvanized at the time. What is the suggested sealant after sanding to prevent bleeding through the paint at a later date?

Is there something equivalent to POR I can use?

Thanks,
Sherwood

Sherwood, treat the nails as you would any rusted metal. Then, sink them below the surface and prime the sunken holes. Fill with putty or exterior spackle and prime again. That should hold the rust from appearing again on the surface.

I just finished doing my house. Do as Milt said and you'll be fine. I picked up some A/B spackle (almost like Bondo) at Dunn Edwards. It works great and you can get 25% off with your AAA card.

Yikes... that's the "correct" way to do it, but that's five steps before the paint goes on... and I've done them and it takes a buttload of time if you're working by yourself.

Sherwood, do you have help? If not, I bet you're looking for cutting that back to three steps... maybe sanding off the rust, then hitting the nail heads with one of those rust-killing primers that bonds and seals, then applying the primer you would normally use before painting.

Of course, you'd sink any nail heads that were raised, prime, fill those holes, and prime again.
