AWD BMWs

anybody have the skinny on used versions of these things?

I think BMW called it X-drive or something...

what is the reliability record?

cost to have it repaired? maintained? (I got way too many cult cars to fix 'em all up...).

fun to drive?

good in snow?

Thx!

They are heavier than a non AWD BMW.
They sit higher than a non AWD BMW.
They have less performance than . . .

A rear wheel BMW with a good set of winter tires makes for a fun vehicle in the winter. I speak from experience:

+1 to what Kurt wrote, even the snow part (not in Texas, in Colorado when we go ski.)

I have had a few E30 325ix's and they were awesome and very reliable. I had an X5 for 5 years that has been really reiable and is AMAZING in the snow especially when I put the Blizzaks on. I just bought my wife a 530Xi wagon and we love it. I do agree that a rear wheel drive BMW with snow tires is normally pretty good in the snow (Ive had 3 M3's and a 540 sport all with snows). Although the rear drive is good the AWD is so much fun!!! As for making them slower, yes slightly but my wifes Xi is plenty fast.

I bought one new in 2004. It's a great car. We don't get a lot of snow here, but when we do it handles it with ease. Once I have a FWD rental while it was in for some service and we got some snow. I drove the Pontiac to get my car and it was horrible in the snow. When I got that AWD Bimmer back it was smooth sailing home.
