Have to be a ton of opportunities in LA, competition as well.
Has he signed up with a staffing agency for some freelance/part time work? What's his resume look like? Can you get a copy and PM it to me? Don't have any leads but I'll give you my feedback as someone that hires creatives.

What does he do? Your description is very vague. If I had more info I could point you in the right direction.

ok i heard from my friend damion.....i'm just going to post what he emailed me, i have his resume i can forward if needed, and can also put whoever in direct contact with him.
thanks for the help everyone ![]() "I have been functioning as a creative services manager within the entertainment and post production industries. Creating promotional material, demo reels, art direction etc. I am well versed in Final Cut Pro editing although I have never used it for feature film. Just for promotional demo reels etc. I also am handy with Adobe Design Suite, creating advertisements and branding materials. Logos, etc. Hopefully this helps you get a grasp on my skill sets. Basically I am headed towards art direction and conceptual marketing using these skills."

I hope he lands something, but he better have a whopper of a resume to sell himself as a conceptual marketer. I think that involves a bit more than images.
![]() On the serious side, I did a job for a packaging specialist. She had degrees up the yang in art and marketing. She has done packaging for Mattel. She is scary good at what she does, but a complete goof ball and scatter brain. Otherwise, I think she'd be pulling down high 6 figures on Madison Ave. |

He is "basically heading towards art direction". I realize he may be having casual conversation with you but he needs to realize that you will pass along info the way he presents it. I'm willing to bet his resume is full of similar soft sells. If he told you, "I am the hottest editor for promotional demo reels in the area." You'd tell people, he's the hottest editor for promotional demo reels!

Has he tried Mandy.com? I work in TV Production (Sports, News, docs, etc.) and I use that as a source for jobs nationwide...That said, I check these sites everyday and it's very slim pickings no matter where you are.

disney has laid off 800 people over the past year. all of whom think they can do my job. there's work out there. but the competition has gotten a lot more stiff.

I think he should be prepared to struggle for a while.
There are a lot of people with scary creative skills out of work right now. He is going to have to go up against guys and girls with great resumes and reels. I'm a Director of Photography and I am loosing jobs to guys with Oscar's on their resumes and who's reels mine just can't compete with. Every time my agent tells me who else is up for the job I always ask "what the he!! is he doing putting himself up for some little commercial?!" There is just to little work for too many people in our business. Sorry , but it is the way it is right now. Steve

What I'm seeing is that the work is going to people and firms who either have some other skill set or are aiming outside of traditional entertainment. For instance our projects focus on military training. The production people we work with either have some previous experience or at least sensitivity to the specific approaches, or are very willing to learn. I've taken a production designer who worked on a previous film project for us and have transformed him into an immersive educational designer. He has worked his arse off though, and is really energetic and has engaged the whole thing. He was art lead on the last season of a major show at CBS so he's not a newbie.
Degree doesn't mean much unless it is in an unrelated area (ie not design/art/film) that he can tie into work. For instance if he was a history major and got onto something where he could use that to his advantage. A good friend is a killer demo/promo cutter and he is sitting idle right now. For creative types you have to be looking at non-traditional markets and clients. |

There's always porn. Their visual effects, graphics and sound is always top-notch.
