How to buy a car: PPI

Hey Guys,

A question about buying a Porsche. I know how important it is to first get a inspection (PPI) with a reputable shop.
Do you negotiate a price with the buyer first and if anything bad turns up in the PPI do you renegotiate or do you go with the selling price and then if anything turns up renegotiate. I would assume you first tell the buyer what you want to pay contingent on the PPI. If the PPI turns up unfavorable things then I would expect to pay less. Any thoughts.

Thanks,
rene

I assume you are mixing up the terms "buyer" and "seller" in parts of your post.

Typically, the buyer and seller agree on a price, subject to a PPI result satisfactory to the buyer.

If the PPI isn't satisfactory, the parties are free to do whatever they want. The buyer can pay the full agreed upon price. The seller can insist on the full agreed upon price. Or the parties can renegotiate the price.

I negotiate a price contingent on passing a PPI. No sense investing money in a car if you have not agreed to purchase it. If a PPI turns up a deal killer, walk.

But I also don't expect to use minor items to beat up a buyer for further reductions.

the and dad911, have pretty much said it all.

If there are costly repairs to be done, the seller should be forthcoming about that before you even get to a PPI. That being said, I have run across some folks with Porsches that know NOTHING about their car. In some cases they paid way to much for the car themselves, and their shocked to find out just how much is wrong with the car. Ugly.

Hey Guys,

Thanks for the replies. It makes sense to only take a car to have a PPI if I am going to buy it. Negotiate a price if the car comes out clean then pay the negotiated price.

And get the PPI to focus on the important things like head studs, compression, gearbox etc. Don't sweat the little things like stone chips or paint fade.

They need to pull the valve covers and look at the studs. You should check the cam lobes while you are in there.
