The bleach thing works, keep the affected area dry and cool keep the sun off of the area. I somehow managed to get it on the old unit about 30 years ago and again 10 years ago:eek: straight to the Doc for the prednisone. Horrible !

We don't have much of Ivy & Oak here in the high dry west good thing I don't even need to touch it to get a nasty reaction.

Go to doctor. Get a shot. Go home.

Drink a few cocktails. Take a credit card and hold it perpendicular to the affected area. Scrape as needed.

Have fun,

Poinson Ivy and sumac and oak. I am highly allergic to this stuff. And it is all over my yard.

I cut the grass on Monday, and did some yardwork behind my shed, where apparently lots of this stuff grows. By Tuesday morning, my lower right arm had a significant rash. As of this morning, I have itchy rashes on both of my arms and both of my legs.

And I have used copius amounts of Round-Up for Poison Ivy in my yard. Last fall, I had a tree guy take out all of the dead trees and undergrowth from the wooded area of my yard - cleared it down to bare dirt and covered that area with woodchips -- yet the poison weeds are presistent.

Yes, I should have been more careful. Should have had on a long sleeve shirt and pants instead of the shorts and short sleeve shirt I had on. I did use "Technu Extreme" to remove the oils from my skin after exposure. But to no avail. I do find that running scolding hot water over the effected area helps the itching go away for a short time, and I've been using CalaGel to ease the discomfort as well.

So my question -- does anyone have any good remedies for either removing the oils once they are on my skin, or for treating the rash afterwords? Also - does anyone know where I can get my hands on some Agent Orange, so I can rid my yard of this stuff?!? ;)

Thanks,
-Z-man.

Just read your post. Maybe others have said the same thing but the worst thing for it is hot water, (I know it feels almost orgasmic), but the heat releases your histamines which causes more rash. I have it also as we speak, and around my eyes. Been to the emergency room 3 times with it. It's the docs saying the heat thing. Good luck, sorry no remedy, I just grin and bare it :(

Buck,

If you have it near or around your eyes, go to a Doctor and get a shot!

Last several times I had it the shot stopped it in its tracks and it was over with in a day.

From Poison-ivy.org

For a serious case you MUST SEE A DOCTOR. For less serious cases check with your local drugstore or see the list below for remedies.

Here are a list of popular home remedies:

* Take a shower in the hottest water you can stand, for as long as you can stand - this may ease the itch for a few hours.
* If heat eases your rash, you can also try a hair dryer, but BE CAREFUL. Don't burn yourself!
* Jewelweed is widely thought to help the rash. Mash the weed and apply to the rash.
* Spray with a deodorant containing aluminum, which most do.

Check out the skin rash hall of fame pages 2-4! Ouch!!

If I see it on trees, I will cut out about 6 inches. Then leave it. It will die and dry out. I watch all the time for it. I get it bad too. I have cleared my yard of it bur stil watch for it near the woods. I understand cows love to eat it. So get a cow in to take care of it.

I thought dead, dried out vines were safe. Not so, got it again.....

I find that Ivy-Dry works the best for alleviating the itch of a poison ivy rash.

I forgot to wear long sleeves when I mowed the lawn for the first time this year (a few weeks ago). I quickly remembered why the next day. I had a poison ivy rash on one of my arms the next day. I hit it with the Ivy-Dry for a few days, never itched, but i did have the ugly rash.

Ivy-Dry now comes in a convenient spray and works wonders for me. I believe the active ingredient is zinc acetate. CVS usually carries it.

Good luck!

Stuff works VERY well. Walgreens carries it in most locations. Ask your pharmacist, stuff really does work. Put it on before exposure, use TEC-NU Extreme or regular TEC-NU after exposure.

Best of luck, I'm horribly allergic!!

That is the best darn stuff. Learned about it from a friend in VA after we whacked his back yard. I highly recommend.

Thanks Joe, it's not real bad, not 'broken out' just itchy. If it does get bad, (which I litteraly could make it so with hot water), I certainly will make a trip to the docs. WOW just remambered I have some Betamethasone Valerate ointment from the last time. Thanks again Joe!!

Ok, one more remedy. Like you I am deathly allergic to the stuff. Like others said wash with soap and water a couple of times. Dry off by padding with a towel and then a hair dyer. Now, at the first sign of an itch, apply prescription Ultravate, a synthetic corticosteroid for topical dermatological use.

and for Heaven's sake don't burn it

Put down some landscape cloth prior to the wood chips

Soap and water right after exposure, benadryl 50 mg at least, caladryl lotion topical, wear long sleeves

That was my mistake last Monday. From now on, I'll be wearing one of those bio-suits if I even step into my backyard!!

Thank you all for the help-- the rashes are subsiding somewhat, and the blisters are oozing as well. Still quite itchy. Ya-hoo.

Z you can now buy a poison ivy soap made by Burt's Bees in alot of places...
I have a few bars of jewelweed soap i use(you have to search for it), but I think the Burt's Bees soap is supposedly very good

Yes... I've always heard that smoke from burning it... if inhaled... will let it loose in your airways and inside your lungs... but I've never had that confirmed by someone with direct knowledge.

Anyone here know?

Get a goat. If you can't keep one, rent a goat. They eat that stuff. I am not kidding.

Good stuff. I have had it at various times to the point that I have been on steroids. I haven't had it for years by 1. recognizing what it looks like. I continually scan any area's when I'm in any wooded area. Here is PA, it is everywhere, usually growing in the borders between the yard and the woods. 2. Any time your in the woods, take a shower immediately afterward. I once did some weed trimming and got exposed on my arms. I went to bed and have the habit of resting my arms on me face when sleeping. I got it on me eyes, ears, and face later on that was a real treat. I hate poison ivy!

rtoms 05-30-2009 04:32 AM

I do, that is why I posted that

porsche4life 06-01-2009 09:52 PM

Wish me luck boys. I have never been allergic to the stuff in the past but I am going to help with a Cub Scout day camp the rest of this week and that camp out there is like a poison ivy breeding ground.
