Med question: cracked/cut skin on bottom of foot

Basically I have what looks like a 'cut' on the bottom of my foot, towards my toes. It's at an angle, ie like an avulsion or a slight 'degloving'. I first noticed it a week or so - I was walking barefoot in the house and it caught on the carpet. I figured I cut it somehow, and it was clean, hadn't bled or anything, so I ignored it. Now it's starting to hurt a little, and I have a twin starting on the other foot.

I tried to look this up on on the 'net, and the google says I have diabetes.

I play sand volleyball 2 or 3 times a week, for a couple hours at a time, so my first suspicion is that it's the result of extremely dry skin or some sort of fungal malady. Not sure what to do with it, but ignoring it doesn't seem to be working.

Ideas?

you mentioned a 'twin' ... but without seeing..
a callous separating..?

Cuts or other foot injuries that don't heal in the normal time are a sign of necropathy, as is numbness in the feet. I.e., poor circulation and/or nerve damage frequently caused by diabetes.

See a good podiatrist. Now. And get a blood sugar test.

I almost lost my toes and might have lost my feet due to a foot injury that didn't heal, got infected and spread to the bones. Due to necropathy, it didn't hut much and so I thought it was not serious. Wrong. I had apparently had very low-level type 2 diabetes for years without knowing it and had severely damaged nerves in my feet. Luckily, I still had decent circulation and a six-week course of IV antibiotics saved me from amputation.

Amputate both feet at the ankles. Don't wait, do it now. In the alternative, put antibiotic cream on the cuts and cover with a band-aid or bandage. In a day or two, all better. If not, go the amputation route.

clean off any calouses with a orange zester so the soft skin can heal better.

I had a fissure open on one heel. I kept it lathered in Cortizone 10 ointment, covered with socks, and probably most importantly.... wore shoes every day. Healed very quickly.

I can go months either barefoot or sandals in the summer. I think both of those contribute to cracking because the feet get so dry and from lack of shoe support. Let's face it, guys neglect their feet until there's trouble.

NEVER put cortisone or any other steroid on an open wound.

Try this next time Terry, put vaseline on heel, cover with saran wrap(yes, the stuff in your kitchen) put on your socks, go to bed

In the AM that hard, nasty skin will be soft and easy to remove with a pumice stone or whatever.

Seriously Thom, if this is for real, PM me. You need a podiatrist, an eye doctor and a good internist if you are diabetic, you need to go see them regularly.

Be a shame not to be able to drive that sweety grey K Ghia because you got a foot taken off at the knee...

Yes, neuropathy. Doh!

Not a joke, though some seem to think so.

I tripped and dropped a floor jack on my feet. Four broken toes on one foot and one on the other. I was barefoot and so got some nasty cuts that let the infection in. Due to the neuropathy, it really didn't hurt much so I tried to get by with some antibiotic cream. Not one of my brighter moments. Then the first doctor I went to didn't even order x-rays (may he roast in hell), just prescribed some oral antibiotics. By the time I got to a podiatrist my feet were pretty ugly (Sorry, the doc has all my pics).

Thanks for the concern, I am in the hands of a good podiatrist and an infectious disease specialist and all is well. No insulin injections required, thankfully. Januvia is getting the blood sugar under control nicely. It was never real high, just long term apparently.
