Inside the Crosshairs...sniper documentary on History Channel...
Just caught this the other night. May be old news, or even over dramatized, but I was fascinated by the section on M24 7.62 sniper in Ramadi. Longest recorded kill shot with that waeapon...7/10 of a mile

I don't really watch TV so i have not seen it. At that range, a person in the cross hairs is tiny(first thing these shows always fail at representing), and yes, any little wind gust, or a slightly misread mirage, or even the slightest misjudgement in range, any little flinch or firing while your heart beats can cause a miss at that range. (and often by 10s of feet).
We did not have the laser rangefinders and ballistics computers that today's troops have. The laser designator we had was literally the size of a suitcase. I used an M21 which had a max effective range of 800 meters (custom civvie versions can exceed 1000m in top shooters hands), so i really would never even have attempted the shot unless there was just no other choice. We would have either stalked closer or called in artillery or other ground forces. The radio is really nice because you dont give up your position to insurgents when you use it(vs conventional forces the radio can get you triangulated, but not vs hajis), and because it allows you to bring absolutely massive firepower to bear. I really, honestly considered my rifle to be a secondary weapon. Our primary weapon was our AN/PRC-119 SINCGARS radio. Of course in a populated area the use of indirect fire or even air can be largely verbotten. In such a case, you'd have to stalk closer or call for ground support of some sort (Tanks, mech units, etc). It is critical that a sniper team never give up it's position if at all possible. Haven't seen the show but have been thru Sniper class put on by both the FBI and Army Green Beret......By the end of the Army Class, we were doing head shots, the first shot on a cold rifle from 600 meters......

It was a fascinating show. Even the guy in Nam going 16 or 16 in the dark with that lame night scope.

Uhhh I think a sig may or may not tell anything; as you know, one can use any sig and be anything one wants to be on the internet - which is why I ask the question, is there anyone who is/was a trained military sniper posting on this board?

That's puzzling; he's usually very outspoken. Just last week he wrongfully accused me of posting, bragging how many Viet Namese I killed back in the day. Didn't sit too well with me, needless to say.
So, you know for a fact that he's a trained sniper?

well I'm not gonna speak for him. If he wants to talk about it that's for him to say. If you two had a falling out then he probably doesn't want to deal with you. personally i'm not going to get involved with you. You just have that attitude thing working for you today and I won't be dragged into that. yer just gonna have to find somebody else to argue with.

Thinking with your dipstick, aren't you?
Food for thought...I have a friend, he & I buddies since childhood. He flew F-111's out of England when Reagan had a bone to pick with Khadafi. Have I ever asked him if he was one of those who delivered greetings from Ron? Hell no! There are bad guys in this world who would like to know who those brave pilots were. I don't need to know info that should be "need to know" for national security reasons...even all these decades later.

I was (for a time) an Infantry squad designated marksman. At various stages i was also a Grenadier (m203), machine-gunner (m60) and mortar crewman (Four Deuce). It is common for troops to cross train on various systems and perform various roles over time.
I have never shot, or shot at, anyone. (I have held several people at gun point as a civilian over the years) I have never been a SEAL, a Ranger, A Green Beret, a Paratrooper, Rambo, an officer, an NCO, or any other fancy such thing. I'm just a regular guy that when talking to Seahawk on the phone today, had to be constantly reminded to not call him "Sir." Seahawk is donating his time and connections to help me out with a military product idea because, i assume, he respects me and my opinion and belives i am legit. Anyone who is unsure of my authenticity should probably be put at rest by the simple fact that a US Navy Captain with 30 years in service is going out his way to help me for nothing...and that the other Navy Captain on this forum also treats me as a brother in arms. Or that a retired 71yo US marine who posts here at pelican that bought a P7 at my recommendation told me in an Email today that he was proud that guys like me followed in his footsteps. I have also- as recently as today- posted clearly identifiable pictures of me in uniform, as well as pix of me in clear military settings. Pix that are virtually unfakeable. I was an EM that did his service and moved on to civilian life. My sister is the war hero in our family. She was a UH-60 Medevac pilot and did tours in A-stan and Iraq. We are both 4th Generation American soldiers. My family has served this nation for over a century. Anyone that does not value my opinion or insights on this or any other thread, is free to use the ignore feature. Or they can simply blatantly troll....like someone who i won't mention, who is the #1 most ignored poster on this entire forum. And that troll did in fact shoot his mouth off about having killed people. I saw him do it 2x in PARF. Clearly, someone just needs a little attention today.
