Another Craig's list score! (with photos!)
But my shop is getting full! Since searching Craig's list I have picked up a FMC tire changer for $400, the snap-on tool box for $500 and now this nice exhaust tubing bender for $600! New it sells for over $7500. Man I love Craig's list, just wish I had a bigger shop for all my new to me toys!

Smokin' deals, I am waiting for all of the closing of dealerships to get my hands on a bunch of those factory specific specialty tools, that are soo damn expensive. I expect that within the next 6 months, you will be seeing this stuff pop up all over the place.

Does look nice. We just picked up an almost complete bio-diesel rig off of CL for FREE last week, complete with 300 gallons of product ready to process.
Its really worth keeping an eye out there. |
I picked up a barley used hooker 2 weeks ago off CL :D
Nice buys vonsmog! |
Diligently searching for a 2-poster car lift. Either dudes are asking full retail (don't they get the "Garage Equipment" mail-order catalog?) or the units have been sitting outside (e.g. "minor rust")... :( Guess I'll go new.

My pops scored that for 700 on the list. |
neato!
i still can't figure out how snap-on suckers people into paying what they do for those boxes. it holds effing tools for pete's sake. |
Snap-on boxes are like the Porsche of boxes. Cheap craftsman is like a Kia. My spensive craftsman is about like a Nissan. Its decent but its not perfect. You can count that it will open however.
|
I know the lore but my $289 craftsman combo does a fine job holding the tools that keep one of the worlds greatest sports cars running. the doors open and even close. crazy stuff but i ask a lot of my tools.
heck for what that box sold for new i've got a '54 BMW motorcycle to tool around on. definitely one of the most overpriced (when new of course, our guy scored a deal!) items i've ever come across. |
Yes but in 20yrs will you 289 craftsman still open like that? I bet not. My dad bought a used Snap-on in 1982 and it still works like the day it was new. All the drawers move without a hitch.
|
Am still using the Snap On box that I bought used in 1979 when I started working in airplanes. It works like new so guess when you look at the cost per day, month, or year its worth it.
|
In 10yrs i could buy another one and probably still be enough ahead to put a mid-rise lift in my garage.
You can look at cost per day, month, week, half hour, whatever you want but the number is still going to be a multiple of what a craftsman would be. Not saying they aren't nice boxes but the prices are completely nutso and not based on anything tangible. For every 'my $3k snap on box is still working 20yrs later' story there are probably 5 'my $300 craftsman box is still working 20yrs later'. Folded sheet metal and ball bearings can not possibly cost that much to make. If i were to guess i'd say the price difference between a top of the line craftsman ball bearing box and a similarly sized snap on box is 10% materials/labor and 90% marketing. |
Hope the cops don't come looking for stolen equipment serial numbers at your place.

Tabs, where do you find your utensils? I've been to a few shows around here, and they always seem like a big circle-jerk of guys asking way too much. Maybe I just need to lowball them with reasonable offers? I'm not even talking about collecting here... I would just like a few utilitarian pieces that aren't rusted to crap.

Auctions...Big and small...
Usually a piece is in the wrong venue or not described adequately for it to bring top $$$$. I recently was the underbider on a S&W 686 wt 4 inch B, that was an early gun which is desirable...for just under 500 to my front door... Lately I have seen good prices on stuff if you are the end user..it it is for resale the margin on the everyday stuff is just not there. Everybody knows what it is and what it is worth. |
On the B 125 Browning it took me an hour and a half to find the right engraving pattern to know what it was and what it was worth.
|
I picked up a Ammco scissor lift for $800.00 off CL recently. It's built in the USA and is very rugged. I'm sure this was a $2000.00 lift new if not more.
|
Used shop equipment is one of the bigger bargains on CL, that and anything else too large and heavy to ship for eBay. The snap-on box in the first post was a smokin' deal. I'l admit that their new pricing is bonkers but for $500 it's a no-brainer. The difference between it and a Craftsman is HUGE. I have tons of Craftsman stuff, (and a snap-on box), there is no comparison. A Matco or Mac box would be comparable but still inferior.
There comes a joy from owning and using high-quality tools and machines that cannot be quantified by the simple, "mine does the same thing" argument, IMO. From cars and trucks to women and horses, some people get it and others do not. |
