I tossed out some 10-year old teriyaki sauce last month. It wasn't spoiled; I just wanted to free up the space.

Reminds me of an old song from way back:

"Well it's moldy bowls and dirty dishes,
life inside the 'fridge is startin' to stir...

well the milk's gone bad,
and the cat's gettin' mad...

'cause he refuses to eat anything with fur"

;)

Oh Haha 06-11-2009 01:28 PM

Nothing.

I am pretty silly about eating leftovers and checking dates on stuff each week before garbage day.

It must come from working in the food industry for so long.

one whiff of spoiled, hot, milk in a vending machine that has been off for a while will do that.

Oh, and I usually go through the fridge once every couple of weeks and put things back where they "belong".

Like my garage yard ,house, and cars I like everything to be neat and tidy. Bugs the crap out of me when it isn't.

Was at the in-laws "granny flat" a few years ago and found a vacuum packed ham in the fridge that was just a few days from expiration, but it appeared inflated. Looked closer and realized that it was actually almost a year past expiration.

Of course, FIL decided he should open it. Gawd!

When I was a bachelor I had some yogurt in the fridge so long it came alive. I taught it to sing opera, talk about culture.

ba da bump.

VINMAN 06-11-2009 02:30 PM

Nothing!
Thats one of the few things I'm really anal about. Im constanly checking the date. Especially with any dairy stuff. I especially skeeve milk. I'll open a brand new container to use with cereal, use it once , then toss the rest down the sink.

The milk thing stems from an incident back in 4th grade. On the last day of school we had to clean out our closets I had a lunch box on the shelf. On the way home I opened it up there was a thermos in it. I unscrewed the top peeked in and took a whiff and puked all over myself. There was milk in it that had been sitting in a hot NYC classroom for about 2or 3 months.

Just the memory of that makes me gag!

The stuff on the top shelf of our fridge lives there for months if not years. I put a label on the shelf "science experiments".

The middle shelf is labeled "small children". That's from a discipline threat I made to my kids.

I found some maraschino cherries in the fridge the other day, had fallen behind the meat drawer. I don't ever remember buying or eating these. I think it crawled over from a neighbors.
