Why do some people walk in the street?

Its a nice neighborhood, sidewalks on both sides of the street and I see people walking by my home in the street all the time. The speed limit is 25 but some fly by. Suicidal???

Cause they are idiots. The pavement is easier on the knees than the concrete side walk..

People who walk in the street (when there is a viable sidewalk) are idiots. Regardless of ethnicity or socioeconomic status.

I don't drive on sidewalks. People shouldn't walk in streets. It's safer that way.

I lived in Costa Rica, the town had sidewalks, the locals still walked in the streets. I never understood it, you would pull right up behind them and they looked at you like you were the idiot, just never understood the mentality.

I walk in NYC everyday. My office is in Times Square and I sometimes have to walk in the street if I want to go anywhere because the sidewalks are jammed to the brim with tourists who are standing around gawking and clogging up the pedestrian traffic. One of the worst areas is in front of Macys. On somedays its almost impossible to pass through the area on the sidewalk. Pedestrians with places to go have no choice but to take to the street. It seems that the city recognizes the problem because they just closed the street in front of Macys to automobile traffic...its now pedestrian and bicycle only.

Around here the sidewalks are trashed. It's safer in the street in a lot of residential places.

There are maniacs here that ride their bikes side-by-side on the 55mph country back roads!
Well out in the road.

I honk at them.

Because sidewalks are uneven, easier to trip, generally not wide enough, people like to walk side by side not single file.

They're morons. They are all over the canyon roads here. Darwinism at its best.

Because around here the jacklegs always block the sidewalks so you cant use them without walking around cars, at every house. I wouldnt block the sidewalk, I have seen my kid riding

some people have claustrophobia so much that they don't like even overhanging or encroaching vegetation

my street also has no sidewalks and is quite narrow with about 5 cars per day on it. it dead ends (quasi dead end -- you can make it down the hill in a high clearance vehicle but not in any sports car; sedans ... sometimes) onto a natural area open to pedestrians only -- not a park exactly but no cars

try working in santa monica. dessicated 50 year old or so women dressed like they're going to the farmer's market, even though it's 3 pm on a thursday, walking into traffic. daring you to hit them.

I see this every day during my commute, on one stretch of road in particular. The speed limit is 35 and there are frequently people walking, jogging, pushing strollers etc. in the street even well after dark. They're effin nuts!

we walk in the street often because we can't agree on which sidewalk to use

Try driving on the sidewalk? or is that why they are walking in the street?
