Yep, he was playin' surf music before the Dick Dale thing made it surf music. Another good one was Link Wray.

That is bad news. I played a set with Bob and the ventures (minus Nokie) at a NAMM show a long time ago, Bob was really mellow, quiet and polite.
he was very, very talented. I always thought he was the real driving force behind the band even after he semi-retired a dozen times and Nokie filled in. They were p[romoting their new ventures model Mosrite guitar and there happened to be a left handled model hanging in the disply. I asked if i could check it out, Bob said go for it. I had no idea who he was at the time, didn't recognize him. i fooled around with it a little and he told he they made that guitar for Dick dale but dick never paid for it. Bob plugged the guitar in and I started playing an amatuerish version of walk don't run. He picked up a guitar and joined in (took over), then Don wilson jumped in, Mel taylor's son started playing an electronic drum kit, can't remember who was on bass. Next thing ya know we had several hundred people crowded around getting a free improptu ventures concert. I could barely keep up but we got a standing O when we finished, I actually took a bow ![]() We played about 6 songs. |

Sad to hear. The Ventures were one of the first albums I ever bought.

Sad. Really summed up the true surf band sound. Refreshing even today. A real loss, but his music plays on.

That's a great story Sammy. There's a good article in the new Fretboard Journal about Semie Mosely and the reissue of the Ventures guitar. One of the best TV theme songs, RIP Bob....

That is sad news about Bob B.
I saw the Ventures last summer for the first time. It was one amazing concert.

Very sad... I met the Ventures manager a few years ago at a Porsche event and he was very interesting to talk to. I'm glad the Ventures were inducted into the Hall of Fame before Bob died...
