Capital One no longer finances private party used cars, has to be from an approved dealership. Sort of a bummer as I thought that was a cool program, but I guess it's a sign of the times.

©2009 up2drive, a division of BMW Bank of North America.

Would rather deal with them than Capital One

Check out local credit unions. I've been in the same boat as you for awhile now (I've been taking FOREVER getting a car). Best rates I've found are at a credit union down here. All I had to do was be living in this county. Current new car rate is at 4.49%.

Credit unions are great. I've probably had eight or so from mine, always do it all over the phone, get approved, have the check overnighted somewhere.

Yep, credit union. I belong to two. The one at work will finance any vehicle, new or used for 4.25%. They will pay up to blue book value on most, but will accept an appraisal (that you pay for) if you are getting something "special".

Thought I would drag this one back up... I am now considering getting a "newer" P-car (keeping an eye out for a 993) and finding financing would be nice. The problem is that I cannot find anyone (including the 5 credit unions I have contacted so far) who will finance a car older than model year 2002. Plenty of CUs and the up2drive folks mentioned above will finance me for a used Cayman, but no love on the air cooled era. The newer P-car is by no means a necessity, but if I could get reasonable financing it would surely make for a fun summer! Any leads on specific credit unions etc?

I guess I should have been irresponsible with credit back when I had the chance

Keep looking for a credit union. Isn't Digital CU in your area? They financed my 2003 330i for the guy who bought it from me. I got a loan on my '83 SC about four yrs. ago from my CU.

No credit union through your employer? Those usually have the most lenient terms.

I've used State Farm bank in the past....they offered low rates with good terms. I insure all of my cars through SF, so it worked out nicely.

Grant - try Haggerty, they still have their link up on the site for classic /exotic financing.

http://www.hagerty.com/Finance/finance_index.aspx

Good luck with the search!

Hi guys,

thanks for the responses!

My company does not have a credit union. I tried DCU, but they won't finance anything older than 1999. State farm says they generally will not finance before 1999, but that they handle older cars on a "case by case" basis, so I will follow up with them. Haggerty rejected the car (the one I put on the application was a 1995 911C4 with 71k and I was looking to finance $17,500) because the car was "not eligible." I guess not exotic/classic enough?

I'll follow up today with Haggerty and State Farm to see what the deal is and let you guys know. Thanks again for the suggestions!

Try asking local credit unions the requirements to join. Many only have residency requirements. Ya never know...

I've found several in the area that I qualify to join, but none will touch a car built before 1999. There are still plenty I have not yet contacted, though.

Also just got the official brush off from State Farm, but not because of the year of manufacture: they say they won't accept new business in Massachusetts.

Maybe this is my cue to just keep saving and buy a car for cash like a responsible adult... (whine)but I want my 993 NOW(/whine)

The local golden one credit union was offering 3.99% APR car loans just recently.
