Glued in Windshield removal?
I need remove the windshield from my sons 98 GTI before I paint the car. It has a crack in it so I am going to have it replaced anyhow. Is there a neat way like maybe a wire to cut the sealer, I know I could just bust it out but would rather not. Any tricks?

I watched very closely as I had my 993 windshield replaced a few weeks ago. The guy had a very cool tool, which is tough to describe. It was like a U-shaped razor blade mounted on a thingy about the size of a medium screwdriver. It cut out all the calk or adhesive without digging into the paint. I've never seen one of these anywhere else. Maybe pay your Safelite shop a visit and ask about it.

My dad has a blade that you pull along to cut the glue. He also has one that is heated you you drag along. You might check around.

I've heard of folks using guitar/piano wire.

I watched a mobile glass installer put a windshield on my BMW in the parking lot at work a couple years ago. He used what looked like a cordless saw with some sort of flexible smooth blade on it.

Looks like the top tool is what I need, well off to the lathe to make up something!

Come to think of it, I do remember seeing him using a hook knife (like the one you pictured) on some portions the powered tool could not get into. You get the blade stuffed in, then guide the round handled blade holder with one hand while pulling on the T-handled cable with the other.
