Good Powder Coater Recco?
Anybody know of a good powder coater I can send some motorcycle parts to? The only one we have here in Memphis would not be allowed to touch anything of mine after what he did to to my last set of parts (he has a booming business somehow). So after that experience I want to find a shop that someone has direct experience with. There is one in Nashville that has a good reputation but it is a minimum 14 week turn around time.

Have you considered doing it yourself?
Back about 5 or 6 years, there was a PCA tech day where a bunch of folks went to a guys house. He had a $300 powder painting kit, and an electric oven that he bought at a garage/yard/rummage sale for $20. He showed us some of the stuff that he'd done previously and even did a valve cover while we were there. It was pretty cool and worked well. He'd even done stuff that was too large to allow the oven door to close or even fit in the oven. Said he'd do one half and then the other half. He had a nicely restored longhood and even a restored 70's something Ferrari. Both were pretty nice.

Does amazing work. Works primarily with bicycles, but there isn't much size difference with moto parts. |

When I was changing out my alt, I decided to powder coat the fan and shroud. Was looking for someone local and ended up talking to this paint/powder supplier. He highly recommended this one shop, but mentioned there's no english spoken and no receipts, but the price is good.
I went there and my jaw dropped, I swear this place looked like Green Acres' chicken coop. It wasn't much more than a termite eaten lean-to. I was tempted to keep driving as I didn't know how this place was still standing in the middle of town, but now I was more curious than smart. I walked in holding these two pieces of Porsche and about 5 people were there all pretty busy doing stuff. One guy greeted me with a smile and held out his hands for the parts. I said, Yellow here and black here". He said "two-tree days". I showed him where the alt was a tight fit and not to coat where it mounted nor the ends of the blades. He said, not problem, $20. Okay, I was thinking $20 each is plenty cheap enough and probably an hour to scrape off the paint where I told him not to coat, sounded okay because I didn't have an immediate altenative, plus I was anxious to get the car back together before I forgot how all those alternator wires connected. I come back 3 days a later and WOW!! Both pieces are flawless and care was taken to not paint the areas I had mentioned. I told him how happy I was and was taken out the money and he says, $20. I said, each, right? No, shaking his head, $20 is all. I happily gave him $30 and left with my parts all pretty. |

Thanks all- Not enough pieces to invest in the stuff to do it myself, plus I don't have the space.
Will check out the bike guy. Terry - Sounds like I need your guy!

What parts from what motorcycle?
If small enough and you own an air compressor your initial investment could be well under that amount. I powder coat my parts with a Harbor Freight unit ($59.99 - 20% =$47), powder is about $14 a pound. If small enough you can powder coat in a toaster oven from craigslist. I got a regular home electric range for free. So my initial coating costs were under $100. Here is some of the stuff I've done. There is a Derby cover and fin guard as an example of some motorcycle parts I've done. http://gallery.sohc4.net/main.php?g2_itemId=306724&g2_page=1 Plus check out www.caswellplating.com and thier forums. People with powder coating shops from all over can be found there. If you really can't find anyone you could send them to me but shipping to NJ might not be cheap! Good luck, Matt |
