What do you think about Remington chainsaws & string-trimmers?

What do you think about Remington electric chainsaws & string-trimmers?

I am more interested in what you know or think about the Remington brand than what you think about electric equipment in general.

Thanks in advance for your thoughts.

is "chainsaw" and "string-trimmers" secret code for "shotgun" and "rifles"? (just in case the wife checks in) ;)

Actually, it used to be owned by the Remington firearms company (thus the name), but the division was sold off many years ago. I think the brand has been around since the '50s.

I realize it is light-duty equipment, I am just wondering what people think of the brand, especially at its relatively low price-point.

Personally I wouldn't touch them.

You really need to buy Husqvarna equipment...

...but I'm biased.

ah..I raise your Husky (which are great btw, I have a Husky 345 saw) with a honda trimmer...they are awsome! worth every penny extra.

I've had a 16" remington electric chain saw for about 15 years and it works great. I've cut oak trees up to 12" in dia. with no problems (like any just need to keep a sharp chain). No gas mixing and very easy to start :)

2 caveats:

not good if you have a big yard - extension cords are a pain.
does not have automatic chain oiler. have to manually push a pump type mechanism to oil the chain.

If you just use for occasional trimming they work well and are relatively inexpensive. If you are cutting firewood for the winter, go with a good quality gas saw.

"Remington" has been the brand for guns, shavers, typewriters, computers, and now apparently strong trimmers. Seems like a brand name that has been diluted to "Zenith" levels.

Thanks for the comments guys. I asked the question because my company just bought the Remington brand out of bankruptcy. We are global producers of what we call "outoor power equipment" (OPE) & we have a portfolio of brands -- Remington is our newest brand.

We realize that Remington is considered "light-duty". There is nothing wrong with that -- some people have light-duty requirements, or their budgets limit the products they can buy.

We are simply trying to understand what people think of the Remington brand. Do they know it? Do they think of Remington as a producer of electric/battery OPE, gas OPE or both? How do they perceive the brand from a quality or performance standpoint.

We will be conducting formal consumer research to answer these questions. Your comments are about what I expected to hear from this group. I realize that this is not proper consumer research, but I thought it was worth asking the question. Besides, it is inexpensive research -- you guys freely (pun intended) provide your thoughts & opinions on all sorts of subjects.

I also realized that, to a great extent, you are a bunch of "gear-heads", with appreciation of premium OPE (thus the Stihl & Husqvarna references). In other words, you are not a typical cross-section of consumers. You are not representative of the overall OPE marketplace. I expected that you wouldn't think much of so-called "opening price point" or "value priced" products. That is fine -- I happen to feel the same way.

Thanks again for your feedback. I appreciate it. Anyone else is free to chime in if they have thoughts on the subject.

Happy motoring!

fwiw:

The 16" Remington chain saw I mentioned above was purchased at Sears and is actually branded as a Sears chainsaw. I believe the Remington chainsaws were branded under several different brands over the years. They have been around a long time.

Yes, I work in marketing for MTD Products. We manufacture/market several brands:

- Opening-price point (Yard Machines)
- Value (Yard-Man)
- Mid-premium (Troy-Bilt)
- Premium (Cub Cadet)
- Commercial (Cub Cadet Commercial)
- Compact utility tractors (Cub Cadet Yanmar)

We have a few other lesser known brands (White Outdoor, Bolens, MTD Gold, etc.). In addition, we produce some private-label products, such as Huskee for Tractor Supply Co. & some Craftsman products. And we have a couple European brands -- Gutbrod & Wolf Garten.

I am the Consumer Insight Manager, responsible for consumer/market research.
