Do You Eat Anything When It Is Still Alive?

I have insomnia, so am having a weird thought. Or maybe I am having a weird thought, so am having insomnia. Anyway -

Can you think of any food that you eat when it is alive?

Maybe we should eliminate fruits and vegetables from this. A carrot would qualify as "life" if we found it on Mars, but I'm not sure how you determine when a carrot has "died". So, I'm really talking animals.

Flies and gnats. Seriously. I do. Good protein during a ride.

Goldfish, over 100 of them.

"Waiter! There's a fly in my soup."

"Don't worry, he won't have drank much."

The occasional fly I guess - accidently.

Hell yeah! Max Von, have you ever gone to B&G Oysters in downtown?

jyl 06-28-2009 08:53 AM

Oysters were on my mind last night. I was about to get out of bed and have some fresh Oregon oysters, but I wasn't quite up to swallowing a living creature, now that I'd thought about it. It's remarkable what a good night's sleep will do, though, and I've just polished off the last dozen. And it's not even 10AM.

Don't forget sea urchins.

I've had ama ebi sushi that was alive less than a minute before I ate it. I guess that's as close as I've gotten. Yes, we've all eaten live bugs (probably some while we slept).

I've not had this, but here you go.

A buddy that's a sushi chef told me about this. The chef will pick the fish, fillet it and send the sashimi out on the plate with the still "live" remains.
