Is zythromax still the antibiotic of choice?

My wife has a pretty good sinus infection and related cough.

She is supposed to run a 15k in 2 weeks, and she isn't getting better fast enough. She's going to the doctor at 4. What is the best antibiotic these days? Zythromax I think was a 7 day treatment that works super fast. I also remember arythromycin being the one that makes you feel like you are getting punched in the stomach for 8 hours straight, so I will tell her to avoid that.

Thoughts?

Erythromycin is evil -- not only does it give nearly everyone major trouble with their GI tract, but it has been linked to hearing loss (supposedly reversible).

FYI the spelling is zithromycin if you want to look it up. I have had good results with it.

I am not a doctor, consult your lawyer, etc.

It will depend in large part upon the orgamism responsible for the infection. The clin lab needs to ID the species then the Dr can determine which anti-biotic is best suited.

I assume the Doctor will test for if it is bacteria, and what kind of bacteria it is. This can be done while she is there, right?

YES. Each antibiotic has been developed for a certain type of bacteria to fight. And each bacteria presents itself in different parts of the body. You don't take clindmycin for the same things you take azithromycin for, or erythromycin, or amoxicillin, or penicillin. They're not all the same.

Uh, Patrick, you sort of used some bad examples, all the ones you list do have pretty similar indications, for example, clinda is what you use for PCN allergic, so yeah, you pretty much do take them for the same thing. Zithromax is a good one for respiratory infections.

She needs to do the eucalyptus steam treatment. Get a pan of water, put some leaves or oil in pan of boiling water, breathe in the steam, clears me right up every time. I can't remember the last time I took an antibiotic for anything.

How about going to your doctor and getting them to assist. Asking for info on antibotics on a sports car forum is not the best thing to do, and I am being kind in saying this.

Taking these medications (antiboics) too often can leave your body defenseless when its really needed.

The worst antibiotic reaction I ever had was to Cipro. I think it would have been less painful to run a 20' drain snake up my colon, but the end result was about the same.

I think you misunderstood- she WAS gonig to go to the doctor (and did). I just know that there are some doctors on here and I was going to get some data before sending her in. Trust me- I learned my lesson about medical advice from non-doctors years ago in college when our chef told me that if I could move it, it wasn't broken (it was).

As for taking them too often, she doesn't think she's had an antibiotic since childhood.

As for the final analysis from her doctor, she said that she thought it would get better on its own without the antibiotics, and it appears that she was right- wife is on the mend at this point. I put her on a strict regimen of vaporub, which I repeatedly offer to apply for her, but she gets pissed and says that her breasts aren't the sick part (apparently I had a problem targeting the 'right' areas).

The only thing that made this different than normal was that she has a race coming up, and wanted to kick this in the butt fast so she could get back to her training regimen.

Schedule another race. There probably is another 15k or 10k close by 4 weeks later. JMHO
