Why do women watch soap operas?

My wife is a smart lady, so this just doesn't jive with her personality. She insists on Tivo'ing and watching those retarded soaps. I cannot find ANY redeeming aspect to this drivel. Bad Acting Everybody basically just sleeps with each other and then lies. The writing is for retards. (No offense). We argue b/c she wants to put this crap on tv EVERY day. Do your wives/ gf's watch this crap? Any idea why? Why don't these soaps just go away?!!?!

Escapism. I think men watch sports for warrior and camaraderie needs.

Have you watched them? When I go into the waiting area and they are on, it is usually some fabulously beautiful woman wearing next to nothing. I usually linger a little longer. It like soft porn with commercials.

I was going to answer "I have no idea whatsoever," but, Seahawk's answer brilliantly nailed it.

Why do men watch sporting events? Just a bunch of guys throwing a ball around, then one team wins, then it's over.

Soap Operas and Romance Novels are the same thing in two different medias. They are both porn for women. Whereas men most commonly fantasize about the sex act itself with little or no emotion involved. Women are turned on by the emotional aspects of sex to a far greater degree than men and often have little interest in the "mechanics" of the sex act. Hence the overstated emotional aspects of both genres. These supply the emotional inputs that most women find lacking in their lives. Astute men will pick up on the hint.

Okay I'm going to throw my man card toward the flames for a second here. I actually started watching Young and the Restless for a while. Probably lasted a year or so until I moved and do not get CBS anymore. Why you ask? Well, it was on TV, I didn't do anything after I got home from work at 4, so I checked it out. It made interesting phone conversations with my mother too who has watched the show for 20 years and finally had something to talk to me about. I honestly think the writing on Y&R was really good. Sure some of it was ridiculous, as the people seem to get married/divorced once a month. And people age at different rates. But the writing was interesting and the acting was pretty good. So anyways, I stopped watching it like I said... but this year I had no classes or work around lunch time and we've refused to get cable TV at my new place, but we do however pick up "Days of our Lives" So me and my male housemate similarly aged in his 20's started watching it every day at noon, for fun. It was ridiculous. Horrible, Horrible, HORRIBLE ACTING. No discernible plot. Seemed to revolve around an older guy dating seeming 15 year olds, a woman obsessed with stealing babies (WTF?) and an old dude with a bad russian accent pulling some mob family S***. To make it less painful we started a Days drinking game... take a drink every time someone: -cries -dresses too slutty for their age -talks about wanting a baby -has a baby -woman gets B****y -kisses someone seeming too young/old for them two drinks for: -a woman hitting another woman -two women getting B****y at each other plus several rules I forget at the moment. We finished six beers apeice in 50 minutes last time we played. I suggest trying this with your own soap opera, YMMV...

I have recently been drug into the dark abyss of "chick flicks" by my G/F... gee what a waste of time. Typical chick flick: Movies starts... downer downer downer downer downer downer downer downer downer Uplifting scene, uplifting scene, downer downer downer downer downer downer Uplifting scene end of movie Fortunatly she prefers to rent DVD's instead spending the big bucks on going out to a theater.

Back in the day when I didn't have cable, I had to watch these sometimes. I learned some things. First, if you MUSt watch one, watch it on a spanish speaking channel. The chicks are about 20x hotter, and they all show as much of their breasts as possible. There was one that I was watching where this old lady had an alcoholic pet monkey who would have its own dream sequences where it would make love to the local sherriff (a human). | ||

I once heard someone describe a woman's channel surfing as 'clicking through until she sees someone in tears...... and then watch it'
