I'm on the ultimate cell phone plan, what to buy?
So the wife and her daughter go down to Sprint, pick up a couple of Palm Pre's and sign up for a family plan. I'm the beneficiary, I guess, because I get the whole package for $20/mo. I don't need any of this, but I might as well have some fun, because the contract is 24 mo.
The sales lady is telling me the Blackberry is the thing to have. It's 50 bucks. A friend has a cool Samsung, I have no idea how it works, nor do I the BB. So, if you were given GPS and unlimited Net access plus all the rest of the stuff like TV and music, what would you get? I don't have even a 100 songs on my iPod and not one pic or video. I have no idea what I will do with this phone, but I will try the GPS. I was gonna buy a Tom Tom or Garmin, but I won't now. Touch screen keyboard or slide out? Really, I have no idea what I will do with this thing. Might as well buy what you guys would buy. Hey, can I get a camera as good as the stand alone ones that cost around 100 bucks? My digital camera was purchased at Fred Flintstone's garage sale. Think 4 AA batteries that last minutes, not hours. Build me a phone. Remember, it's Sprint (and I'm not doing the radio). |

I have had 3 BB's and will be moving to an iPhone next month. Check out this site for phone reviews. They are very thorough.
http://www.engadgetmobile.com/2009/07/01/sprint-matches-verizons-pace-launching-blackberry-tour-on-july/ They really like the Pre and iPhone. The BB's are no slouches either. I have a Curve now and use it for work so I'm on email all the time. I still think BB's are geared around email first and the phone is secondary. My camera is busted on it so I cant take pics any more. GPS and web interface is decent and I find myself using the GPS more and more. If you will be doing mostly calls I'd find a more phone friendly device. Typing in a number you do not already have stored can be a pain and the QWERTY keyboard takes a bit to get used to at first. I'm already on att so moving to an iphone is easy and I cant wait.

Monza,
Hope you have tried the Iphone already. My copilot just switched over to it and he hates it as his hands are too big for the touchscreen keyboard.

I have heard the same but have tried it a bit since my sons have the ipod touch that I have fiddled around with. I've also been on the BB for almost 5 years now so I think I need to make a move. The iphone web and app features, and new price are just too good to pass up. I wouldnt have made the move but the new Cut/Paste and email search features were the final features that made my mind up. I havent done it yet and plan to spend some time ont he keyboard this weekend, only if my son lets me.....

The keys visible on the screen might not appear very large, but the touchscreen sw actually senses where the middle of your finger is pressing down on the screen. You don't have to try and be careful and selective when pressing on the screen - you can type with the fattest part of your thumbs so long as you center them over the key locations. It just takes some getting used to. Mark

I have found my HTC Touch to be very handy.. I can still work (some what limited) no matter where I am. One cool thing I just found out this week, I could down load a Google Tool bar, with Google Seach, Google earth, You Tube & some other stuff, all free with my Sprint account.. The Google Earth on the phone makes finding places I haven't been much easier..

Joe, the iPhone is pretty good. My partner has one and she loves it. And the "phone" part of it works better than any BB I have experienced. I went to get one a couple of months ago but the zombies at the Apple store wierded me out and I left before even looking at them.
Milt, unless you have a need or desire to get connected on email and text messages, any of the basic phones Sprint offers will be fine. LG, Nokia and Motorola all have good offerings.

The big fingers thing goes away on the touch screens.
It's just a matter of learning where the "meat" of your finger is. Your fingers are not flat so there is a high spot that you will hit with. You just need to learn/get used to where on your fingers it is. Turning an iPhone sideways gives you a nice large keyboard.

Seems to be all votes for iPhones. For the moment, iPhones are on ATT, I'm on Sprint. I can't use an iPhone. so, I'm asking about what I CAN use.

I'm a big fan of the blackberry curve (currently use one). Real buttons, even if they are smaller than the touch screen buttons, can actually be felt and I can type pretty darn fast on it now. It didn't take blackberry a year to realize that cut/paste was a useful feature either. Anything I've ever needed to do it can do.
Whatever you do, don't get the blackberry without the full querty. I think the one withouth qwerty is called the Pearl. My friend has one. It is obnoxious. If they are going to give you the GPS for free (which AT&T would charge be $10/month for, which I refude) its a no-brainer really. For the record, iPhones give me the heebeegeebees. Plus, if you are like me and drop phones, the iPhone seems to have a predisposition to smashing itself. |

I really like my N82, though it's more of an ultimate camera phone...

I just got rid of the Sprint Instinct which is like an iphone but not really. I now have the iphone. Hard to beat.
With Sprint I would get the Pre.

I've had a World BB for almost two yearrs. I find it doesn't do International was well as advertised, plus I can't seem to get any radio or music like Pandora on it. The GPS from Verizon is a joke. They take out the native GPS and put in their own which they charge $10 for. It works OK in urban areas, but if you don't get cell service, like on the trails at Shaver Lake, CA where I'm camping this week, it can't tell you within a mile of where you are, if at all. It uses the cell towers in lieu of satellites. I'm going for the IPhone in November when my Verizon expires. Pity, I've been with Verizon for almost 20 years, and they don't get it. I've heard VZ has better coverage, we'll see.

I hear the HTC touch is good. Never played with one. I would go BB if I couldn't get an iPhone. I had a pearl and I really liked it. If you are worried about keys I would go with the Curve or the Bold.
