In CA, is it legal to tow a trailer behind another trailer?
I have a set of Jet Skis and a boat...anyone know the reg on towing two trailers? I have a 3/4 Yukon, a Ski Supreme tournament boat/double axle trailer and the Jet Ski is a single.....

I've seen it done, but I can't vouce for the legality. The config I've seen is motorhome + auto/suv + boat trailer

I have seen it done also. I know that you can't go over 72' in total length. You won't have a problem there.

Hello Mike,
The law varies by state and province. An internet search turned up about a 50/50 split whether it is legal in California. From what I could interpret, it is legal in CA if you have a CDL, which i assume is 'commercial drivers license' ?? probably best to check with the DMV for your state. max

max is correct, only legal on a commercial vehicle IE: trucks, not private auto

Got the answer from my neighbor who is a CHP motor officer....Class "A" non commercial license with a double trailer endorsement....
Got the manual from DMV. Written and driving test required with a self endorsed medical questionaire....I guess I need a pulse.

I know someone that trailers: truck-camper trailer-boat trailer.
Maybe a call in to the CHP? KT

My 'CHP guy' up here said that the only non-Class A with doubles way was to have a trailer behind a fifth wheel. The trailer-trailer was not legal. Not over a total of 10K pounds and not over 70ft total.

Mike, yes you can do it. All it takes is a Class "A" non commercial license with a double trailer endorsement and a written and driving test required with a self endorsed medical questionaire. You might want to get a DMV manual.
No thanks necessary, glad I could help ![]() |

I do it here in Colorado all the time. 18 foot travel trailer, then a 5x8 small trailer with dirt bikes and a 4 wheeler.
Its easier with a 5th wheel, but if you have a good hitch, its not bad, until you try to back up. Bill |

Update:
Got the engine running...stoopid thang refused to start. Had to pull the plugs, do a de-fib on the starter and after THAT...the external water pump decided to hand grenade.....was able to find parts in Podunk Santa Barbara on a Holiday weekend..... AND then....we did the second hitch fabrication.....woooo hoooo....thanks to my partner in crime Ingo..... ![]() ![]() ![]()

Gonna get the Class A license sometime this month.....fixing up the Jet Ski trailer. Gonna put some tall, tell tales on the fenders for the back up cues.....film at 11.
BTW, the screw up on the prop guard was from a previous owner.....it was whacked HARD.....can't bend it back. don't really wanna. It's a reminder.

Looks great.
I like the pins. We did something similar on our 1300# trailer-mounted BBQ. KT

Give yerself some kind of queue to remove the hitch before launching. Have you ever sat at the launch ramp with a beer on a busy afternoon? Comical.
The other comment is in regards to strength. Just wondering if the rear of the boat trailer is strong enough for a hitch without beefing it up ![]()
