Shotgun question for gun guys:

Just acquired a Winchester model 1300 Defender from a friend in exchange for doing some work on his BMW. It's a pistol grip w/ 18" barrel, basically a cop's riot gun. It's really cool, not sure how it will be to fire w/ that grip/stock, couple of questions:

What does anyone think of this gun? What shells or slugs should I keep in it for zombie-blasting? TIA.

Denis,

Nice. I have a cheap Mossburg similar to the 1300.

The first round is regular bird shot, the rest are #2 buckshot. Mine is a 20 gauge so your options are different. Some good links:

http://www.gunsandammomag.com/cs/Satellite/IMO_GA/Story_C/The+Home+Defense+Shotgun

http://www.internetarmory.com/shotgun_ammo.htm

I really recommend some time in the desert...these type of shotguns do require some acclimation.

I have a stocked one in 20 ga that's hung around the house for a number of years. Not a particular fan of pistol-grip stocks on a shotgun but hey, run what ya brung. Big variety of shotgun shells out there, the first couple that would come out of mine are bird shot. The rest are buckshot. I keep a variety of shot sizes around for pest control.

I would strongly caution you against trying a slug in that gun!! Stick to bird shot/buck shot as mentioned above.

What is the shotgun designed to shoot? A magnum round might be unnecessary. You will definantly know you have fired a magnum round!

Oh, and use two hands, not just one to fire with.

go to range.

set target up a greatest distance that you may shoot in your house.

shoot birdshot and note pattern. # 6 or #7 is a great all around shot for blinding bears,birds/bunnies/snakes/coyotes etc.

set another target up and shoot federal LE low recoil 2 3/4" OO buck

note pattern. if all buckshot NOT in chest area. send snotgun to VANGCOMP in chinovalley,az. read vangcomp.com cover to cover. do not buy any stoopid gizmos unless VANG approves. he is GOD of snotguns. obey his teachings grasshopper!

slugs are silly except for deer hunting or BEAR!

vangs guarantee: all OO(13 pellets) buck within 9 inches at 25 yds.

all slugs grouped 3" at 100yds.

my benelli M-2 and my REM 870 from hell are both there now being sighted for slugs at 100 yds and some more tweaky boy gizmos being installed for when the ZOMBEEEZZ ARRIVE!

Thanks a lot. I'm inclined to start looking into different stocks for the gun right away, I can't imagine what it's like to shoot a 12 gauge w/ a pistol grip. Even though it does look hella-cool.

reality is fer me:

HK/Benelli M-1 21" vent rib is pistol gripped. this is my combat wombat DO IT ALL snotgun. IC choke gives ability to shoot #6 #7 birdsnot/OO buck/slugs under any condition. have factory extended mag tube and HK factory turkey sights on it. check rest and 5 rd shell holder with pouch for chokes(blackhawk). daves metal werks red alum shell follower. GG&G bigger bolt handle. daves metal werks oversized safety. shoot anything/anyone/anytime simply by picking flavors of blammo. must wear shell belt 50 rds w/shell bag(pick em up) and 55 rd bando-leer when shooting this gun. why? cuz its the worlds FASTEST SNOTGUN! 5 rds in 3 seconds! so when hunting due to goofy laws i must have legal beagle plug in mag tube. ie. (2) rds in tube,(1-juan) in pipe. so what this means any and every bird WILL DIE! it just may take me (3) rds if he/she is flying supersonic. with extended mag tube yer guarrannTEED a vist from mr. RANGER DANGER . "son.........i better see 3 rds come out of there!" "now load (4) rds in" GOD HELP YOU IF THE 4th round feeds into mag tube!

Benelli M-2 TACTICAL FULL BLOWN COMBAT WOMBAT ZOMBEE VAPORIZER. 18 1/2" barrel pistol gripped, ghost ring sites(LPA-factory), blackhawk cheek rest and 5 rd shell holder w/pouch fer chokes, daves metal werks red alum shell follower, picatinny rail on top receiver for optics, daves metal werks oversized safety, nordic components picatinny rail on front mag tube connector(nordic components) to allow streamlight TLR-1 flashlight(death ray) with remote corded switch attached to foreend. honed smoothed polished trigger job action job from vang comp.

REM 870 from hell vang comped, spec ops folder pistol gripped stock, and wayy more zoomy goodies than i have time to list here. ie the worlds most OVER ENG. MONEY POURED INTO IT anti ZOMBEEZ snotgun. kind of like the porsche 911 of remington 870's.

I LOVE PISTOL GRIPS! with those 3 snotguns in those configs. i can DO ANYTHING!

benelli M-2 is going to be my 3-gun snotgun. if ya gotta ask what a 3-gun is...............GO WATCH and BE ASTOUNDED by the company you will keep.

the (2) reasons on the planet you want to use slugs....................

yer a cop on a cheap assed dept with zippo budget which cant afford a decent centerfire rifle for its officers. this allows LEO to go from OO federal buck for close encounters ie. entering house/building to then get some distance when hes first responder to a distance shot on bad guy. 100yds max w/slug 200yds max w/sabot.

deer hunting/anti bear duty/mtn kitty/bobby kitty/coyote(the trickster) .

using a slug fer home defense is about as STOOPID AS USING a .357/.44 mag/.223/.308. can you say ? OVERPENETRATION INTO NEIGHBORS HOME AND ENSUENT LAWSUIT that will end up allowing you to push a freeking grocery cart and live in the gutter when ya get out of prison and then family SUES YOU INTO THE STONEAGE on the civil side.

if ya live in rural area disregard above and alternate btwn OO buck federal low recoil LE ammo and fed low recoil 2 3/4 slugs FOR MAX DUTY AND STOPPING POWER! same for anti bear duty w/JUAN LIL TRICK! fer oso(bear) duty start with #6 birdshot and aim at head TO BLIND CHARGING BEAR, then OO buck, then slug, then OO buck repeat til empty, then combat wombat reload.(while POO is running down yer legs!).

Denis,

It is my opinion to stick with 2 3/4" rounds. You are not required to use 3" or 3 1/2". Try it once. If 2 3/4" is too much, trade gun on another weapon. I will not shoot .44Mag, it is just too much round for me.

I will assume you are living in single family unit. Heavy rounds can easily go through walls. Where are your family members/pets/neighbors during the confrontation. How far away are your neighbors? A good hydro-shock will stay within the perp. You want rounds that enter and stay inside the same target IMHO.

Long weapons in the house are easier for the perp to grab and harder for you to swing into play.

My advice on this board is more old school. I will always tell people to get a revolver if they are not WELL versed in firearms. I will state you do not have to prove you are a "man" by using the most powerful rounds available. In trained hands, a .22LR is just as deadly as a .50 or .44Mag.

Speeder,
First, what are your intended use for this shotgun?

If for home defense, leave it alone and spend the money on proper training. #6 shot is just about perfect for in-home use. Muzzle blast will make you deaf and at night virtually blind for a few minutes. Training will prevent it being snatched and used against you as well as mitigate the hearing and vision loss aspects.

If you want you can pick up a hunting barrel and shoulder stock inexpensively for that purpose.

If you are really into zombie phobia, then all advice is useless as you have already given up on reality.

My 18" Mossberg has a sliding stock and when I got it I took it to shoot some clay pigeons, it was a hoot, got 8 of 20 and would have been happy if I even hit a couple. I hadn't used a shotgun for years and it was cheap and fun.

It's all been said. Personally, I think pistol grips on shotguns are stupid. Go shoot it, you might start to understand what I mean.

try shootin 100 rds of 3" OO BUCK and 3" sabots/slugs OFF THE BENCH at (1) sitting!!!!!! without a shoulder pad!

i dont care if a 1000 ZOMBEEZ/1000 polar bears/1000 mtn kittys are coming at ya....................ITS GONNA HURT.....................REALLY REALLY BAD!

specops(blackhawk) only mfg of standard recoil reducing stock. standard stock/folder/ar-15 style. blackhawk.com

i have blacked and blued my shoulder more times than i can count. i learned my lessons.once when younger on my ass with double barrel 12 ga despite warnings not to pull both triggers at once(recoil) .

CCW lil ADVICE UPON JURY TRIAL: use SAME BLAMMO AS COPS DO! ie. federal low recoil 2-3/4 OO buck and federal low recoil 2- 3/4 slugs. anything more like FLETCHETTES or DRAGON BREATH or any other retarded insane over penetration round will deem you A PYSCHO GUN NUT in eyes of jury.

baddest of the bad bear round............BRENNEKE SLUGS! hands down and used by alaska fish and game and u.s. wildlife

+1. they're fun for about 5 minutes, and then it wears off REALLY quickly. I switched mine back to a regular stock, but still have the 18" barrel

Great weapon, but i'd put a real stock on it.

I view pistol gripped shotguns to be severely handicapped compared to the same exact weapon in a full stock version.
