Holy crap the Dutch guy made a ton on it!

id10t 04-13-2013 12:33 PM

I think the year of the car is also part of it.

Typically, guys will lust after a new model high end sports car in high school, and not be able to afford it. He goes out, goes to college, joins the military, whatever. Has a life and a career. Gets married, has a kid or two, and when he hits about 50 or 60, his house is (mostly) paid for, his kids are out of the house (hopefully), he and his spouse have stable jobs and income... so why not buy that car he lusted after in high school?

I want a couple of cars before it is too late. One is a '67 400 cid HO fire bird. The other is a Foose in a 30's form factor body with "screamer" running gear.

It might be time to go "looking".

I agree with the factors mentioned ie. high school lust etc. In my own case it is the affordability factor. Being a DIY guy by nature (and economics) maintanence is not a huge factor. However, fuel cost is and on my meager retirement budget endless fun behind the wheel is bankruptcy. Don't love the cars any less, just have to shift some of my attentions to a more sustainable pastime. Many of the mainstream retirees are in much worse shape than we had figured on and we have to cut back. That said, the cream is rare and it will only suffer a tempory setback. I lust after cool daily drivers and get depressed when I see the overly restored cars that one would be afraid to enjoy. A well used machine somehow excites me more with its faded paint and a few scratches than the concours queen. I see the gravel flying as the tires spin with the rear end hung out..... the grin on the drivers face. That's what it is really about.

Car prices have defied the economy. I thought McCaw went broke.

Maybe, just maybe, not all collectors are young bucks like us ;) and there isn't the following with younger people. And the old guys collections are getting sold off at an over supply to pay for their old peoples home costs, or sold off by their estate.

It has seemed to me, over the years, that the best cars to buy are the ones the popular guys liked in highschool, just before those guys turn 40-50 years old. Thats when the not so cool guys at the highschool start having disposable income and want to be the "cool" guys now.

I feel like the shift upwards of good condition 911SC's, Carreras, early AMG and M models, etc are showing my thoughts are somewhat correct.

Thanks to our exchange rate all the good stuff is going overseas now........

I wanted a 930 but not when they approach a current one in pricing. Pass.

I think McCaw wanted that green GTO for the GTO reunion in Europe? He has so much money from his cellular biz he probably would have paid whatever the owner wanted--and maybe that's what he did? Probably not an accurate barometer of the market though.

Gold is down also.........

From a high of just over $1800/oz a month or so ago, it is now down around $1500/oz. The housing industry had been showing a little life, but I expect that to dry up also. I fear, ladies and gentlemen, that this country is in for a financial bruising! The next big question is, when will inflation start raising it's ugly head? I suspect that this would be a really good time to make certain that you have a well stocked pantry and a good supply of ammo! If I lived in a big city, I would also try to have a country retreat to go to "just in case"!

I believe the classic ferrari mkt is a different animal. Uber wealth, everyone knows how many GTOs are out there and who owns them. The knock on effect is what I like to watch. You can see it in lesser Ferrari's, 308s etc. and in Porsches. Clean 70s 80s 911sc are getting $20k now, don't know if that will last.

intakexhaust 04-14-2013 12:34 PM

Kills me to see 246 Dino's screaming values. In the early '80's some could be had for $14k, still a bit to pay for one then but very obtainable for most car enthusiast. They had a lull in value going on but then around '05 excellent examples were $100 - $110k. Now these 'Fiats' are $330k to pushing $400k. What the ????

Exactly...

The rich guy that doesn't want the other rich guy to have it will push up the price to ungodly....well, levels like this.

Make sure to stock up on tin foil too, in case you need to make a new hat.

I'm about to buy a car that I've wanted for 40+ years, a '68 Olds 442. Luckily, they've never reached Chevelle or Charger value and I like them a lot more. It truly is about what you wanted as a kid, ever since my schoolmate's dad had one in the '60s, I've loved them.

The one I have my eye on even has the vertical rally stripes on the front fenders. Black/black car with white stripes, bone stock and original. :)
