Sobriety

Well today, the 11th is my 5th anniversary of sobriety. Havn't touched a drop, No AA required, no support group needed, just the memory of a very disappointed little girl and the promise that her daddy would never drink again.
Just thought I would brag a little.
My neighbor wants to celebrate with a kegger. :D

It is something to be proud of. Most people think addictions are for weak people. As a former druggie and smoker I know the cravings. Don't do either any more. Of course at 57 after heart surgery it is easier to resist than at a younger partying age. Good luck on your future sobriety.

Congrats Rick. Just passed 14 months myself. It feels great.

scottmandue 07-11-2009 03:55 PM

Congratulations!

I have been on and off the wagon for a few months now... amazed at how much better I feel when I am not drinking.

Or maybe I should say how crappy I feel the day after I "splurge".

I think AA is a great system for some people... I'm not using them because I still want the liberty to imbibe now and then. I have managed to string a few weeks together at a time on my own.

I live alone so I have to motivate myself... and the cats don't seem to care if I drink or not... stupid cats!

Jim Richards 07-11-2009 04:04 PM

Good man! :)

red911sc 07-11-2009 04:11 PM

Congrats Rick, that is awesome. Children really change us.

Joeaksa 07-11-2009 04:22 PM

Congrats. Someday will take the plunge.

Rehab is for quitters.

targa911S 07-11-2009 04:38 PM

Good for you! If you haven't found out all ready it's the best decision you will ever make. Keep it going.

22 years sober here. It saved my life.

slakjaw 07-11-2009 04:41 PM

BLEW911 07-11-2009 04:56 PM

Congrats Rick and everyone else here who have kicked the habit! Although I have never had a problem with alcohol, I lost 100 pounds a few years ago. My addiction to food was a very difficult thing to overcome, particularly in social situations, so I can appreciate your struggles and the difficulty of putting aside momentary pleasures for a enhanced, enriched, and greatly lengthened life. Again, good job everyone!! :D:D:D

Congrats Rick! Well done.

s_morrison57 07-11-2009 06:24 PM

Cool dude, Blow your horn all you want on that one

God hates a quitter but he looks the other way when it comes to booze and drugs

Por_sha911 07-11-2009 06:38 PM

27 years without a single drop or puff.

Aerkuld 07-11-2009 06:46 PM

Congrats Rick. I've seen others struggle with this and know how hard it is. You have good reason to be very proud.

crustychief 07-11-2009 07:54 PM

Congrats and happy "birthday" Rick!

pwd72s 07-11-2009 07:56 PM

Since being diagnosed with type 2, drinking didn't makes sense. But then, it never did make sense...but it sure was fun once in a while. Not so fun other times...

jhynesrockmtn 07-11-2009 08:07 PM

My father passed a few years ago. Kicking booze was his most difficult and significant achievement. He was a big time AA guy, went from a newbie in the program to running meetings and mentoring people for many years. I think he had close to 30 years when he died.

Good job and best of luck.

Evans, Marv 07-11-2009 09:18 PM

Congrats Rick! Althought I've never had a problem like that, I've known some who had/do. I admire anyone who has the guts, fortitude and just plain will to kick it. Drinking makes up one of those small parts of life that can be lived without.

Schrup 07-11-2009 09:48 PM

Gratz Rick! My daughter was the driving force behind my sobriety. She was 9 years old at the time, now she's 21. I have a 6 year old son that keeps me in line now. Being a good dad is the single most important thing to me. My dad was an example of what I didn't want to be, to include being a drunken monster. I did AA for about the first 5 years. Now I go to pick up my annual coins.

Rick V 07-12-2009 12:25 AM

Thanks guys. (and congrads to all those who remind me that 5 years is just the beginning)
BTW that little girl who made me quit is now a full grown Army MP. I recon I had better stick to my agreement with her.

widgeon13 07-12-2009 05:45 AM

Congrats and a well deserved pat on the back! Keep it going. I've been off the sauce for half my life now. Most likely saved my life, certainly my marriage. I always blamed those terrible hangovers on a bad cigarette. Gave that up as well at the same time. Now just a good Cohiba on very special occasions.

Jim Bremner 07-12-2009 06:19 AM

Please take this the right way guys! I respect each one of you.

I stopped drinking for three years. I had been drinking too much for my own liking, so I stopped

My 4 sons and wife begged me to start having a drink or two! Seems I was a very cranky guy

Hi, I'm Jim and I haven't had a drink in 12 hours.. (the three years was solo)

Congrats Rick. My dad did it with AA. He had something like 25 years when he passed away still very involved with the program all that time.

strupgolf 07-12-2009 05:35 PM

Congrat's, I'll drink to that. Maybe a 7-up or Dr Pepper.

wcc 07-12-2009 06:05 PM

Sobriety? F-that! LOL! It's all about moderation and self control. I mean it seriously. I used to smoke 1.5 - 2 packs A DAY in the military and threw my cigs in the trash THE DAY I got out and never looked back. I've given up on drinking for years and picked it back up once in a while. It's all about 'will' power. Congrats to you and I hope you stick with it. It's easier for some then others..... Now where is that 'bar is open thread'.....

LakeCleElum 07-12-2009 06:29 PM

****** Excellent job Rick. You should be proud.......Myself, I'm approaching 19 hours ******

Buckterrier 07-13-2009 03:32 AM

Congrats Rick. It's two years today for me.

MFAFF 07-13-2009 04:09 AM

Well done... great news.

Sorry tho that it has to be that way...

There is a huge amount of satisfaction in having a very good wine from time to time with a good meal.. or a very good cocktail....

But go for it.

Seahawk 07-13-2009 04:24 AM

Terrific accomplishment, Rick.

We all have our "issues".

Z-man 07-13-2009 04:49 AM

To all you quitters out there -- I applaud you! Well done!

-Z-man.

Oh Haha 07-13-2009 02:25 PM

Just caught this thread.

Great job, Rick!!

I quit smoking cold turkey when we were expecting our first child. I am fortunate that I never a problem being addicted to anything. I enjoy a drink now and again under the right circumstances but there is a good reason I prefer NOT to go out to bars/clubs. Had enough when I played in the band.:D

Crepitus 07-13-2009 10:57 PM

Grats 2 all. 15 months for me. Its hard to admit that I could not handle my booze anymore but after 35 years of drinking way too much I realized it was time to quit. I feel 15 years younger. Healthier and wealthyer!
