If you look up the ISO spec on the passport chip it turns out to be a 13.56 MHz system. Go read about that online anywhere and show me the 33 foot range in real life conditions (someone carrying a passport on their body or in a bag). Sure, if you hang the lone chip from a string and put a powerful reader in straight line of sight with only dry air around it, you may get lucky.

Read the fox news link I posted above.

Here is a video by the guy who did it:

Here is what Mark Roberti, editor of RFID Journal said about it:

I think we are starting to confuse the passport book (biometric passport) with the passport card or pass card. This is a big difference. OP was about passport books. Read this:

http://www.rfidjournal.com/blog/entry/5049/

Passports are HF 13.56 MHz
Pass cars are UHF 860 MHz - 960 MHz

UHF RFID tags indeed work at larger distance. That's how the pass card was designed. So it can be scanned at a border crossing with the person in the car holding it up. If you read more about the pass card you will learn that it has only a number on it that is referenced to a database at the border. Also, it COMES WITH A PROTECTIVE SLEEVE to be used when not in use. So, those morons in SF were running around with exposed Pass cards. Not with US PASSPORTS. Pass cards were not the question here and I remain with what I said, the US Passport Book will not be readable from more than 3 feet away because it is a HF tag.

I don't think these tags are a good idea, btw. I just wanted to chime in to calm some of the paranoia. Obviously that hasn't happened. :D

I am done. This thread start to feel like PARF. SmileWavy

George,

You have to admit, this is one case where the TIN FOIL works.

Even if it is aluminium...

LOL. You are correct. I would definitely wear tin foil on the pass card. I would not worry about the passport.

Seems to me that detection equipment will get much stronger over time.

Today's 10 foot range can easily be tommorow's 10 meter range and so on and so on..

there are limitations as different radio frequencies have refract more than others. It doesn't matter how clear your eyesight is - if you 10/20 or 20/600 if theres no ight coming into a sealed room you won't be able to see. Radio waves are electromagnetic radiation - same as visible light.

Don't forget to keep your cell phone off.

Scratch that. Don't forget to remove the battery from your cell phone while traveling.

haven't you noticed that even if you remove the battery from your telephone, when you replace it, the time is still correct?

In Oklahoma we have the PikePass system for the turnpikes. The unit has a battery that only lasts a few years. After that you have to swap it out for free for a new one. As the battery gets weak the reader that is focused on you car can't read it. Without a battery the RFID system can't read it. It has to be very close to work without a battery.

Nuke it and claim ignorance.

This "big brother" crap is starting to go way too far...

The terrorists we really need to worry about will find ways to counterfeit the ones even with the RFID chips. Does nothing against the dedicated professionals with big-money backers.

10,000 illegals from Muslim majority countries driving cabs in NYC alone. Whoever they need to something bad is here already.

But I like waiting on line. It makes me feel safe!:)

Science is all about making the impossible possible.

I can still see in a pitch black room, i need only use thermal. There is more than one way to skin any cat.

For a lot of phones, it's true.

now why are we all worried about this chip? they will know your comings/goings anyways. right? isnt the chip for dudes like jason bourne anyways? us going to new zealand for an outdoor adventure at some resort, nobody cares.

when you renew your passport, they'll send you your old one back...with two holes punched in it. i had quite a few stamps, and i was happy to get mine back.

Ya and they send you a nifty FOIL pouch to keep it from reading if you so desire.
