Good clothing
So as to not hijack the Drycleaning thread further, I figured I'd post another one.
Where does one get good clothing? I've always gone to Mervyn's, or Penneys, or Costco, or some such, but I've also always been underwelmed by the quality and durability. According to some, it seems there is much better quality clothing to be had out there, but at a price. So, where do I buy these better clothes? How do I know I'm not being fleeced? Edumacate me, oh clothed ones! ![]() |

You get a good GF or wife who picks out good stuff for you.

Lands End has good quality at what I consider reasonable prices.

Bill's Khakis are the best I know of as far as pants. Expect to pay anywhere from a 100.00 to 150.00 a pair.

Depends what type of clothing you require.
Casual - Dockers, L.L. Bean (lifetime satisfaction garranty), Lands End, REI Work (physical) - Carhartt, Filson Work (office low end) - Brooks Brothers, Nordstrom house brand, Macy's house brand Work (office high end) - Ermenegildo Zegna (a favorite of mine), Savile Row bespoke tailors (I reccomend Huntsman & Sons, but they are all very good)

I suppose it depends on your office and what level you aspire to. But I have found if you want to hang with the big boys you need to look like the big boys.
Of course, there are exceptions to every rule. But the above advice has served me very well.

I have come to the frightening conclusion that the clothes at Goodwill are higher quality and in better condition than what I have in my closet. Yes, I'm self employed and work from home! How did you guess?

Wow, this topic has some legs!
I'm usually jeans and a tucked in longsleeve button down shirt with the sleeves rolled up. I've recently discovered Ecco shoes, which are way nicer than my New Balance tennies. |

I hang with the big boys and do in fact own/wear bespoke suits, but don't really know anyone who would look down their nose at Brooks Bros.

Hijack away, my friend. It appears our destinations are not far apart.
Like I say, I like Ecco's, but they're by no means expensive. I got mine at Nordstroms, I think they were about $180, and they lasted about two years. They looked good doing it too! |

If I knew what to look for in quality clothing, I'd be all over Goodwill. Unfortunately, I've got more money than ability to recognize quality clothing. And that's not saying much!

I have no idea what kind of clothing the OP was looking for, so I gave a range of quality makers that would cover everything from hanging out at the beach to mucking out horse stables to management (Fortune 500) to senior management Fortune 100 to premier night at Cannes. Let him pick where he needs to be. I work in the IT industry.

No, Pep, you misunderstand - they're not sneakers. They're casual shoes. I'd never pay $180 for sneakers either.

RPK, thanks for your suggestions - that's exactly the sort of thing I'm looking for; examples.
I have two suits, but they're definitely not high-end. I hardly ever wear them, just need one for the Christmas party and the occasional wedding/funeral. Business casual is probably the dressiest I'm looking for. |
