An update on the Perth tapes. They are data tapes only, no video.

The new tapes are from the original Kinescopes, and the slow-scan video originally broadcast. They are being cleaned up and reshown as 'new'. Turns out the archived tapes were taped over when NASA ran out of blank tape in the '80's.

I can't tell if you're serious.

But if you are, the answer to your question is that those are craters, not boulders.

So the darkness is the shaded area on the (sunken) left side of each crater.

I do see some boulders in this enlargement...

...and their shadows trail off to the right, the same as the lander's.

Really? Where is your information coming from?

From the link I posted earlier:

NASA has seemingly confirmed that the original taped recordings of the first Moon landing have turned up in Australia - almost three years after the agency admitted it had carelessly mislaid them.

The Parkes Observatory in Australia captured the 1969 live images straight from the lunar surface to magnetic tape. What the US public saw, though was a compressed feed "downsized" to local TV resolutions, while NASA itself grabbed a 16mm copy from a TV monitor.

The Parkes Observatory tapes were apparently shipped to the Goddard Space Flight Centre in Maryland a year after the landing, but in 2006 NASA confirmed that despite an extensive search, their whereabouts was unknown.

However, the Sunday Express now claims the footage was actually gathering dust in a storage facility in Perth among other tapes containing Moon dust data - presumably the same material which Oz scientists hoped to run through a vintage IBM 729 Mark V tape drive earlier this year.

A NASA spokesman confirmed the Apollo 11 landing recordings are the real deal, and said: "We’re talking about the same tapes."
And another link http://www.theregister.co.uk/2009/07/14/moon_landing_footage/

In which it is said
Quote:

NASA has tantalisingly announced that it will release "greatly improved video imagery from the July 1969 live broadcast of the Apollo 11 moonwalk" on Thursday.

The agency reports: "The release will feature 15 key moments from Neil Armstrong's and Buzz Aldrin's historic moonwalk using what is believed to be the best available broadcast-format copies of the lunar excursion, some of which had been locked away for nearly 40 years."

We assume the footage in question is gleaned from the original magnetic tapes recorded by the Parkes Observatory in Australia, and which belatedly turned up in a storage facility in Perth.

In 2006, NASA admitted it had mislaid the tapes which were supposed to be in its Goddard Space Flight Centre in Greenbelt, Maryland. As a result, the world has (until Thursday, we hope), had to make do with NASA's inadequate copy of the original broadcast, captured on 16mm film from a monitor screen.

Is that the story from 2006 that they lost the tapes?

Because they turned up in Perth:

It was posted on Yahoo News a couple days ago on July 16th.

Is the report somehow wrong?

I'll look for the post, but the Hollywood digital imagery firm is involved because it was discovered that all there was to work with was what is out there now, and NASA is trying to downplay the word 'new' in the tapes story.
