Young punk kids racing...

Guys, just heard a funny bit on the local news. NASCAR is returning to Portland (OR) International Raceway...first time they've visited in 28 years for this road circuit.

But the really amazing tidbit? Behind the wheel of one of the cars? Herschel McGriff, winner of the inagural Pan America road race. Herschel's age? 81!
Yep, gotta get these seniors off the road....and onto the track!

The interview was cool. He mentioned signing an autograph for a kid that last time NASCAR was at PIR...the kid is at the track this weekend...now 40 years old.
Really, he looked good...maybe it's the benzene in fuel that's beneficial?

Thanks for posting the interview...Loved it. How'd he do so well in Mexico? He drove log trucks for a living...knew how to handle the gravel sections well.

Hershel was a regular in the Winston West series after his other carreers. He ran one of the first races at CA Speedway at a pretty old age. At the time, he said he knew when it was time to retire. And, he did sort of retire a bit after. Musta been those 200 MPH straights!

Well, that would scare me, and I'm "only" 63.

Race Results

The race is over. Herschel had to start a lap down because of a parts change before the race. He got that lap back...finished 13th out of 26 cars. BRAVO!
