Cobras at the autocross
Sorry i don't have any good pics or video........
Had 7 cobras (didn't pay attention to brand) at our autocross yesterday which is about twice the usual. at least 1 had a supercharger on it. i was working the start line and had to walk away to call in the car # as it staged:eek: Anyways i gotta say i have a new appreciation for those things. In the past one or two would be...quick....but never top time. dunno the results from yesterday yet but i'm sure some of those quys are awful near if not at the top. seeing these at car shows and cruising the local blvd is neat. seeing them tear off from a stoplight is even neater. but what caps it all is seeing a blown cobra w/ great big fat comp tires hauling arse around the course! absolutely unreal. just being next to those things when they tore off the line was an experience (what's that honey? couldn't hear you...). definitely hope to see more of them in the future:D |
We had a Daytona Coupe at a recent autocross.
|
1 of the 7 was a coupe.
|
But they get killed in PAX.
|
Pax?
|
Where was it held? Down O.C. way?

mathematical formula to handicap the times tp determine which driver was fastest. E.g.: the theoretical fastest class is assigned a factor of 1.00. The slowest class is assigned a factor of something less, say .600. If the fastwest class car runs a 1:20:000, and a car in the slowest class runs a 2:00.00, then the slower class car is credited with an adjusted time (pax TIME) of 1:12:00 (2.00:00 X .600) and beats the faster car IN THE PAX standings... |
ah, i see.
sail i go to the ax in bowie held by pca potomac. nice group and some very neat cars to see. delaware pca has been doing theirs near wilmington but have had a couple in dover. would like to get to on there at some point. let me know if you want to do the next potomac ax. it's in WV at Summit Point (skid pad area IIRC) and i may grab a cheap hotel and go up the night before. |
Beretta,
Which car were you? The dark longhood? Were you running heat 1 or the replacement starter for heat 2? I was in the brown Targa driving in heat 1. The silver one had the supercharger, it sounded NASTY in a good way. I'm pretty certain that blue one got FTD. I wonder what it's like to drive one of those things.....the steering must be razor sharp, there was a ton of movement when they turned the steering wheel. I think their typical approach was balls out and lots of brake lock up. It was fun to see. |
yup, dark green longhood. ran heat 1 and started heat 2 working down in E. came up to replace the starter that was having some trouble. starter should probably be assigned to experienced people when possible as you could cause a lot of damage if you're not paying attention.
was 119 in the first heat...not sure if i saw you run. i'll check out the pics when tony posts them up and it'll probably come back to me. the silver cobra was definitely the nastiest. just unreal how explosive those cars can be and some of those guys were really hustling the turns too. i believe some of those guys were with a cobra ax club in the area. kinda surprised such a thing exists but was talking with one of the owners and i wanna say that's what his t-shirt said. |
I was 113, you should have seen me. :)

ah if you were in the middle row with me then that explains it. the way everyone was queing up i had to get in the car about the time 109 was starting. i try to watch as many cars as possible particularly 911's so i can learn more about what line i should be taking. i guess that's the good thing about being the slowest driver...pretty much anybody there can teach you a thing or two;)

A friend has a Superformance Cobra with Rouch 427 fuel injected motor. An absolutely gorgeous car to look at. A bit of a handful to drive. Sounds awesome. We call it the "Beast' for good reason.

I had developed a friendship with a guy that owns a Robin Egg colored one from Ft. Lauderdale. The friendship blossomed from a friendly rivalry at my local SCCA AX. He came up there to run many years ago and I normally get bumped into their class from BP (back when there was a BP its now XP) I did not mind running in AP and actually enjoyed the challenge trying to beat these monsters with my little RX7.
Anyway, I beat him the 1st time he came out and he made some mean comments to me about my trailering my car and he drove his up with a tire trailer. I commented back that I had a kid in a Kart too and this was the only way to get everything there. If my kid does not go I pack the tires in the car and drive it as well. We swapped TTOD's and class wins many times over the years there, but, if we went to a more wide open event, he cleaned my clock. He was a much better driver at high speed than I was, more concisely, he was insane and had no fear. He took his Cobra to the Bay Bottom Crawl (google it) and on his 2nd practice run on Saturday he shattered the record for a fendered car. On Sunday he almost got the coveted TTOD trophy but could not beat one of the Formula Fords that were running. The ford had him by about 1 second. It is a rare day when a fendered car wins there overall and this guy came the closest in years. The killer was his car has a 302 in it, nothing special other than it is a HP 302. No blowers, turbo,s etc... He could just drive the wheels off of it. |
The Daytona coupe that came out with us ended up with ttod. However last time when it was really hot the guy brought his vette. Guess he didn't want to be in a fiberglass box...
