Die Fledermaus

We had bad storms come through last night.

This morning I went out to clean up the carnage and found a little bat sunning himself on my little concrete thing under my backyard spigot. I thought he might be hurt, but he opened his wolf-like mouth as if to growl when I got near. I left him alone. He was mostly black but had a furry, orange-ish chest. I checked on him a few hours later and he had crawled between the concrete thing and the house to sleep. I just went out again (dusk) to check on him, and he was gone. That's good, it means he is out feeding.

If he comes back tomorrow, my wife and I have decided to name him. I think Die Fledermaus is a cool name. She wants to name him Baxter.

He looks something like this (not my picture):

I have a friend in Germany that had little bat fly into her room recently. She named it 'minivampir'.

Very Cool. I bet he rewards you with your kindness by eating all the bad bugs in your night sky!

Bats on the ground are likely injured or sick. Bats can't really take off from the ground.

Seeing them during the day is unusual but not completely abnormal.

Out during the day could mean it's rabid.

Personally like bats. In NY we had some roosting near our house. At dusk/early eve we used to sit in the back yard and watch them.

They'd come over the house and drop into the yard and do strafing runs the length of the yard and pull up into the woods.

Was enjoyable to watch.

Well, he didn't come back to the same spot today.

I think he just got knocked from the Ash tree during the storm and decided to stay put until nightfall. I'd imagine he climbed up the house until he was high enough he could take off.
