Thinking of building a DH2?

What do ya think? Been flying my SE5a for 20 years now, time to build something new and exciting. This would be so much fun!! that would be full size...

I am sure this is stating the obvious, but it must have been so much quieter and so much cooler not to have that old motor right in front of you. Can you imagine how much oil those very old radials must have leaked?

Don't know about available hangar space, but how about a Caproni Ca. 4? Full size.

Now that would be fun! I actually have thought about a Gotha bomber, I don't think there is enough spruce in the north west to even build something like this?

The DH2 looks to be a great gun platform..

I somehow came to believe you were a pilot. Will the the one you build be full size or RC.

It will be full size, I just put up that clip to show the gotha, If I build it, I'm flying it!

Yep, every few hours just top off the gas and fill it up with oil. ;) :D

WWI engines were rotary engines. Radials came later on. The early rotaries didn't leak oil. They burned it. Oil was a consumable. That's why they wore scarves. Too mitigate the ingestion of the castor oil.

You can find more info here.

Rotaries - like a Wankle?

I seem to remember an old radial where, IIRC, the motor (or was it the heads) actually turned with the prop. Is that what you mean?

BTW-sorry for the stupid questions - I'm a pilot wannabe.

Yup.. rotary.. motor is fixed to the prop.. crankshaft to the bulkhead...
Interesting to see in action and to maintain.

Like that, not a Wankle.

The prop was bolted to the engine 'block' and the crankshaft was bolted to the airframe.

The whole engine turned around the crank.

The rotary was the solution to the cooling problems that the early radials had. The cylinders spinning around with the prop helped cool them.

The lubrication system was just shooting castor oil into the cylinders which was burned with the gasoline.

Radials had been around before Rotaries.

Another interesting thing about the rotaries was there was no throttle. Either full power or no power.
So you moderated the speed by turning the engine off and on, sometimes many times a minute.

Water cooled inline and V8 engines were the most used engines.
