Question/Poll for the Racers

Do you find that racing provides enough of an outlet so that you drive slower on the road?

m21sniper 07-27-2009 11:16 AM

Does drag racing count?

If so, my vote is no.

Tyson Schmidt 07-27-2009 11:27 AM

Sorta.

A race weekend gives me adrenalitis for a few weeks, and sometimes longer. It definitely puts a permenant damper on the need to show off on the street, or "race" other cars.

You'll never drive slower than on the way home froma race weekend.

And no, drag racing doesn't count. After all, it's automtive arm wrestling. Probably makes most guys even bigger douchebags on the street. You just don't get enough seat time and satisfaction from it, IMO.

m21sniper 07-27-2009 11:33 AM

Ah, so you're an elitist?

All racing is an arm wrestling match driven by egos.

Agreed about not getting enough seat time though. I can usually get in about 8 runs on a drag night. Tis' just not enough.

if i may chime in from the kids table that is autocross....no, not for me.

i find myself wanting to 'rotate' the car at every tight turn and don't feel i've made the most of my brakes at stop signs unless i've gotten just the slightest hint of lockup.

jhynesrockmtn 07-27-2009 12:05 PM

Yes and no. Racing and track days helps to get things out of my system so to a certain extent it helps. On the other hand, I'm more aware of how my car feels and it's limits and every once in a while when I know the tires are warm and I've got clear road ahead I'll "take advantage" of freeway on ramps to push things a bit.

I practice late braking and trail braking in the roundabout near my house. You'd be surprised what I can do with a Ford Expedition in there. At least, the guys in BMWs seem to be :)

Very funny how everything happens in slow motion when towing the race car back home on public roads. Gotta keep checking the speedo- yup. Still going my normal speed, just seems so slow.

Big +1

My GF accuses me of driving faster after a day of A/X

As an autocrosser / DE driver / PCA DE instructor, allow me to chime in:

Typically, I drive slower on public roads but for one exception: on and off ramps. Gotta clip those apexes!!! ;)

-Z-man.

Disclaimer: I'm not a club racer, nor do I play one on TV. But I almost bought a Sham Wow once...

Tim Walsh 07-28-2009 05:24 AM

as an autocrosser, the only thing that I go faster on is the on/off ramps, otherwise I'm a real slowpoke.

Former Kart racer and hpde days up the wazoo. I was invited to be a instructor for a group of corvette drivers. I didn't do it due to recovering from a compression fracture at T10. I just wasn't strong enough to have a buffoon at the wheel.

The poll needs BOTH!

There's days that I seem to drive slow, some days faster.

Rain days, FASTER!

After a kart weekend Driving any car seems to wallow and slosh around.

David 07-28-2009 07:58 AM

Maybe on the drive home. The only thing that has really slowed me down is age, but there are still several people who still only ride with me when they have too.

s_morrison57 07-28-2009 08:16 AM

I found that driving cars at the limit was a tricky thing to do properly and to try and do that on the street is just crazy, you need a controlled enviorment to go fast. Speeding on the street is also a bad thing , you never know whats around the next corner. I go slow most of the time except in the 930 but it only gets punched in areas that I know and never in town only on the highway

No, ma'am. I haven't seen my daddy in years. But, my mama say he's out racing cars, and, well, dipping his wick in anything that moves.

svandamme 07-28-2009 09:25 AM
