Insuring an older 911

Hey guys,
One thing I have been wondering about is when that 911 purchase is made just who should I look toward for the insurance.
My regular carrier, Geico, has a form of Classic Car coverage, but I would like to get some opinions on who you guys use - Heaven forbid you've ever Actually had to file a claim on the Porsche! - but who do you use and what kind of service/premiums/coverage are you getting?
Thanks, as always!

Hagerty.

Mutually agreed value.

No fuss.

Have a couple of cars with them.

hagerty
they are easy to deal with so long as you have a newer car as a daily driver

I use State Farm. No claims for the 911 but have had my others need work. No fuss and very reasonable. I had the 911 appraised by an independant person and it is classified as a classic car. I have to limit the miles to 5000 per year but that's no problem for me.

We have all of our insurance with SF so we get all kinds of discounts.

Are you going to drive it every day, or at least once a week, or are you going to garage it and keep it only for shows?

If you drive a lot, just go with whatever insurance you have on any other cars. You wouldn't think twice about insuring a $45K SUV with your normal company, why worry about insuring a (presumably) much cheaper 911 with them?

Let me say that I'm not against garage queens at all, and something like Hagarty works great for them, but any other Porsche should just be under a full coverage, standard policy, maybe with an agreed upon value.

Yup, tis how I do it

I have my 911 with Leland West on a collector car policy. Agreed value, limited mileage, not to be used as daily transport, and must have another car 10 years old or less. This works fine for me as I like my 996 as everyday transport. Excellent coverage for about $350 per year if I recall correctly.

It depends what you want to use your car for, but I'm very happy.

I use AAA. $250. Per year. 5000 mile limit, but I can use it to commute. Agreed upon value. I told them what I wanted, they looked at the car and said OK. I think the catch is that I also have a daily driver insured with them, so they know that this is a 2nd car.

www.americancollectors.com

Been with them almost 2 decades with 5 cars insured...Agreed to values, parts insurance as well. Have had 1 claim, no hassle. go to their site and it will figure you a quote on the spot. If you call them, ask for Maura Craven. She's been with them a long time.

Take it from personal experience that a "normal" company that one uses for a DD isn't the best way to go for a collectable or quasi-collectable car. I went through hell with my insurance company when my 951 burned up a few years ago in order to get them to agree upon the value.

Now there's no way I'd ever do anything other than a stated value policy - and most "normal" companies won't touch those - they want to dictate your value to you and then lowball from there in the event of a claim.

I've had Hagerty for a few years now and they are reasonable and handle claims well (broken windshield).

Soterik 07-28-2009 07:30 PM

I'm currently with Hagerty and have been for quite a few years.

A couple of things..

There is an "in sight" clause in some of these policies. Basically means the car has to be in "your sight" the whole time. Hagerty doesn't have this, but many do.... so if you take your car on a Sunday drive, stop for lunch... and if your car gets stolen, or damaged and it was around the corner...it's your tough luck.

Also, if you take your car to work...even if your other car is in the shop...no coverage. Again, if you take your car to a shop for any kind of restoration (not maintenance), your car typically isn't covered, so make sure the shop "is".

And another... no trips to the mall. Going to a movie and it's located at the mall? Skip it, even if you park "safe", no coverage. Same if you go to a restaurant that has a location that is considered a mall, again... no coverage. I'm thinking of restaurants that are theme oriented that have some locations in upscale areas with malls, we have a mall locally that has a PF Changs, Ruth Chris, Z-Tejas, Cheesecake Factory etc.

So, ask if any of your driving or parking habits are covered....

Now there is an insurance company that does do some regular driving coverage, it was a discussion on Pelican. Do a search, and I think you'll find it.

I used J.C. Taylor of Upper Darby, PA for my DB4 before I sold it. I use Hargety now for the Targa, no claims history yet.

Thanks again guys,

This is why I asked the question..... At first Geico didn't appear to offer a "stated value" policy and wanted to insure it like a regular daily driver.... after calling back another service person told me they indeed have a collectable car division, transferred me there, and we discussed it. --J
